Suits Review: Home to Roost (Season 7 Episode 6)

Reviews, Suits

Oh, Mike. You should have known this is what would happen.

Harvey finally finds out what Mike has been up to on Suits Season 7 Episode 6, “Home to Roost.” He’s actually a little more forgiving — if we can use that word — than I would have expected, but it doesn’t matter. Everything still blows up in Mike’s face thanks to Alex.

Mike’s real problem isn’t that he’s trying to do the right thing, even when it’s wrong in a lot of ways, it’s that he’s still working for Pearson Specter Litt.

Somehow, he’s going to have to break away from the firm altogether so he can focus on the kinds of cases he really wants to be doing, or he’s going to have to come to terms with his reality. Trying to play both sides carries too much conflict, and that fact that he was willing to bury himself in lies once again, even though the reason was noble, is difficult to watch.

Suits is a show that often lives within gray areas, and that’s exactly what Mike has been struggling with. None of this is black and white, but he’s still clearly having a hard time figuring that out.

All that said, it doesn’t mean seeing Mike’s case fall apart is any less heartbreaking. We want him to succeed — and we want to see Oliver shine at this point.

The fact that Alex is willing to make that public display and ruin everything is telling, and Harvey figures that out pretty quickly. More secrets, more lies. I’m so curious to find out what Alex is hiding. I just hope the firm holds together after all of this.

And I hope this is the last time Mike finds himself keeping elaborate secrets — it’s exhausting, and I don’t want to see that become a pattern.

Speaking of the firm holding together, Louis finds himself in deep trouble thanks to the way he treated Stephanie earlier this season. She, rightfully, files a sexual harassment lawsuit against him, and he scrambles to do everything he can to make it go away.

Unfortunately, in doing so, he reveals his worst side yet again. More and more, Louis seems like he’s going to break. The fact is, we’ve always known this side of him. When we first met Louis at the beginning of the series, he wasn’t a likable character at all.

Now that we’ve seen his depth and watched him grow, we know that when he blows up like this, it’s because there’s something going on beneath surface. In this case, it’s losing Tara — and losing out on the chance to be a father.

Understanding the reason for Louis’s actions is ultimately what makes Stephanie back down. Brian suggests that Louis offer up a simple apology, and it turns out, that’s all Stephanie really wanted. Louis opens up to her, explains what happened the night before he blew up at her in front of the other associates, and offers her the chance to see him at his most vulnerable — to see him as human.

How could you not sympathize with that side of Louis?

His vulnerability there says something so important about the way his character has grown. I tend to focus a lot on Harvey’s growth throughout the series, but Louis? He’s the most dynamic character on the show.

He even gets his associates back by the end, when Donna realizes he’s ready.

And for the most laugh out loud moment of the season, and perhaps the series, he has a special gift for Brian’s child. A onesie that reads: “You Just Got SPITT Up.” (Those have to be available for purchase somewhere now, right?)

Meanwhile, Harvey’s relationship with Paula brings up complications for Donna. There’s a reason Harvey hasn’t told Donna that he’s dating Paula Agard yet — possibly several, but deep down, it’s because of the complex relationship he and Donna have.

These two people love each other, but their work relationship and their friendship kept them from ever taking that step. That doesn’t make it any less painful for Donna to learn that Harvey is getting serious with another woman. And perhaps, it’s that fact that makes her realize feelings she has for him the first place (and maybe vice-versa?).

The shot of each of them sitting alone in their separate offices is telling either way. I’ve never thought the driving force for Suits is for Harvey and Donna to end up together, but it’s hard to imagine they won’t somehow find a way to be together eventually.

  • I loved this episode! I loved Rachel telling Mike what a moron he is (okay, she didn’t say that, but she meant that lol)

I am enjoying seeing Louis behave more calmly.

The only bit that made me cringe was when Donna did the crazy eyes after finding out Harvey has a girlfriend. I think they should tone down the face she pulls. The audience is smart, they don’t need the facial expressions to be so overdone!

    • You’re so right! The Donna bit was a too overdone. And thank goodness Rachel is there to give Mike her opinion. He needs it.

  • I really liked your review and agree with it. The deal made with Harvey at the end of season 6 was hasty and would not work out in the long run. Mike never did want to go back to PSL to work on corporate cases even if he missed working with Harvey, but Harvey offered him such a good deal that he could not turn down. It was really a ‘too good to be true’ deal after all. I think that Harvey should have made an effort to find out about what Alex was hiding and made sure that it was nothing that would threaten the firm. Instead, he unknowingly helped Alex cover up by killing Mike’s lawsuit. I think we will see a Harvey vs Mike scenario whereby Mike continues to pursue the case as something smells fishy and Harvey would protect Alex’s client as is his duty to the firm.
