Killjoys Review: Heist, Heist Baby (Season 3 Episode 8)

Killjoys, Reviews

On Killjoys Season 3 Episode 8, “Heist, Heist Baby,” Johnny and D’av step up in the strategizing department since Dutch is off attempting to process that she’s a part of Aneela.

It’s always great to see the Jaqobis boys working together. Their brotherly banter never fails to brighten up a depressing, “oh my god we’re going to die” situation. Because no matter how bad things look, there’s always time to give your brother shit.

These scenes also showcase that Johnny and D’av aren’t just pretty faces. They don’t need Dutch to get things done. It’s nice that they get a chance to shine and showcase what they both bring to the table.

D’av: How am I supposed to present this to the war council tonight? Welcome, I’ll be your general this evening. Congratulations, you’ve all signed up for certain death.

Johnny: I guess you should have thought of that before you gave yourself a promotion, jefe.

D’av: Don’t give me shit, Johnny

Johnny: Oh I’m giving you shit. See this? This is my shit face.

Honestly, I’m a little torn on the heist. While, it is fun to see the team back together doing a simple mission, Jelco being there kind of ruins it.

Suddenly, it’s not about our trio; it’s about catching up with Jelco. Does anyone care what he’s been up to? He should have just stayed off in the desert living his strange third husband life.

What I wanted from this heist was Johnny, Dutch, and D’av having a moment to themselves — a glimpse back to simpler times when all that mattered was the warrant, no war in sight. Especially now that there’s the very real possibility that Dutch is going to die (but also, like she can’t because helllllo main character), the heist should have been the three of them kicking ass.

Seriously though, Dutch cannot die. My heart can’t take it, and my heart definitely can’t take Johnny having to watch her die or learn that she’s died.

The only slightly good thing that Jelco brings to the table is his conversation with D’av. Jelco encourages D’av to give Dutch what she needs that no one else can give her. D’av is the person Dutch can share anything with, no matter how grim, which is something she can’t do with Johnny.

Recently, Killjoys has been especially great at distinguishing D’av and Johnny’s relationship with Dutch. They both offer very different things. Dutch knows that Johnny has her back no matter what it does to the mission, and D’av is the guy that Dutch can trust to get the job done.

You know, it’s still a little bit difficult to wrap your brain around the Dutch is a part of Aneela thing. It’s like you get it, but the more you think about it, the more confused you get. This is why it’s so nice that this little parallel is thrown in:

Aneela: You’re my tether, Kendry.

Sound familiar? Dutch called Johnny “her gravity,” and what does gravity do? It tethers you to the ground.

Describing someone you love as your anchor is definitely unusual. The fact that Dutch and Aneela make this similar comment shows that while they are very different, they are definitely similar in their phrasing.

It’s a small moment, but it really helps the similarities become a bit more distinct. Yes, we all know they are physically identical, but that’s nothing new. This parallel shows that Dutch and Aneela’s similarities goes far beyond the physical.
