12 Things We Want to See in This is Us Season 2
NBC’s breakout hit, This Is Us, will air its sophomore season this fall, and we have a wishlist for things we want to see happen!
With all the promise that the family drama holds, there is ample opportunity for This Is Us to explore a number of storylines for its characters. The show has utilized its dual timelines well in providing history and insight into the character’s motivations. There is more we can learn in This Is Us Season 2 about the life experiences that shaped everyone’s lives.
Even though it’s hard to predict where the show will go moving forward, there are a number of things we would love to see, and a few burning questions we’d like answered when This Is Us Season 2 premieres on Tuesday, September 26. Here’s our list:
1. How Jack Died

Let’s start with the obvious. While seeing how Jack died on the show will be difficult for many reasons, it’s probably best that we treat this like a band-aid that is better yanked off quickly. Keeping the audience in suspense might just build our expectations so high that it will fall flat on its face. Let’s hope the show doesn’t keep us guessing for too long, and reveals how the Pearson patriarch lost his life sooner rather than later.
2. Flashbacks of Kevin and Sophie as a Married Couple

Sophie came to us as a surprise.
Introduced halfway into the first season, Sophie immediately left an impression because of the effect she still had on Kevin, who was holding a torch for his ex-wife years after their divorce. Although they rekindled their romance, the two didn’t get a chance to properly discuss and overcome their past infidelity issues.
Now that Kevin has taken a job opportunity in another city, it’ll be great to see flashbacks to their marriage to see where things went wrong and determine if these two can truly overcome the past problems as well as this current one.
3. Randall Having Fun

This is Us Season 1 was probably roughest for Randall, who not only experienced a painful falling out with his adoptive mother, Rebecca, but also lost his biological father, William, to cancer only months after meeting him. All the while, Randall experienced bouts of debilitating anxiety and stress.
In This is Us Season 2, we want to see Randall cut loose and enjoy himself, maybe have a guy’s night out with Kevin or even a fun date night with Beth. We want to see our guy smile and take it easy for a change.
4. Beth’s Background Story

Beth is an awesome character. She’s nurturing, tough, sensible, witty, and loving. But we don’t know all that much about her, yet.
She’s the only person in the core cast (besides Toby, who just met the family) who we haven’t seen in flashbacks. We’re curious to learn more about her, including the dynamic with her own family growing up and the early days of her relationship with Randall. We also want Beth to have a substantive story in the present, and we think the potential adoption story will be a great opportunity for that.
5. Better Development for Kate

As we had discussed before, Kate’s story has been the most frustrating out of the bunch. Specifically, her relationship with Toby and her weight-loss arc were riddled with problems. But there’s still a lot of promise where she is concerned!
We have learned interesting details about Kate’s relationship with her parents and how that has contributed to her eating disorder and body image issue. And we hope to see Kate’s troubled relationship with Rebecca evolve more, as well as learn more about why she blames herself for Jack’s death. But most importantly, we just want to see Kate in her element, doing something she loves, and being her own person.
6. How Miguel and Rebecca Fell in Love

One of the great things about the show so far was how the the audience constantly shifted on their opinion on Miguel. We weren’t always sure how to feel about him — we wanted to hate him yet couldn’t seem to do it — but now we’ve honesty warmed up to Jack’s best friend and Rebecca’s current husband. We’re curious to see just how these two got together in the first place. Who knows, we might even start shipping them.
