Younger Review: The Gift of the Maggie (Season 4 Episode 5)

Reviews, Younger

Goodbye, Montana or shall we say, Amy? Younger Season 4 Episode 5, “The Gift of the Maggie,” is another solid episode, but not nearly as satisfying as the previous one. There just aren’t as many laughs or aww moments, but Younger is still a pleasure to watch week in and week out.

It’s that precious half hour of the week where we can escape to the glitz of New York City and the pristine grime of Brooklyn and spend some time with characters who feel like friends. Younger episodes are not perfect, but they are never a chore to watch.

After staying in the background on Younger Season 4 Episode 4, “In the Pink,” the men of Younger are back front and center. Josh is featured heavily as his relationship with Montana progresses quickly and then dissolves. Poor Josh just cannot date an honest woman.

Charles and Liza, however, talk sweetly about romance and happy endings while Zane and Kelsey’s relationship continues to flourish.

Friendship is still the focus of the episode and how Josh mainly sacrifices his relationship with Montana by telling Maggie how Montana “appropriates” art, including Maggie’s. Josh senses something is off when Montana drives him to her “studio” out in the country to her parents’ estate.

So, Montana really isn’t an artist, she just simply puts the outline of the state of Montana over other artist’s works. She’s basically a Kendall and Kylie Jenner Tupac tee-shirt. Josh sees the painting Maggie gifted Montana and he knows its fate.

Oh, and by the way, Montana’s real name is Amy.

Even though Montana tries to give Josh a speech about this is what artists do and Maggie would be proud, he doesn’t buy it. It doesn’t sit right with him, and therefore he tells Maggie about Montana.

Josh is back on the market and it’s the perfect time for him and Liza to have a conversation.

Josh asks her why she kissed Charles. Her answer is that she partly wanted to destroy what she and Josh had because she wants him to “have everything.”

She left out the part where she has a crush on Charles.

Liza tells Josh that she wants him in her life and that she didn’t want him to deny him of any major life decisions like kids because of her.

Liza: There’s gotta be a better ending to us than this.

Josh reluctantly agrees to be in her life, but I feel like Liza is being unfair. She is attracted to Charles and has feelings for him. If she really just wanted to blow up things between her and Josh, then she could have just made out with a random guy.

But because she has feelings for Charles, it just makes the whole situation worse.

She wants both of them but knows that she can’t. Hey, I have a really hard time deciding between Charles and Josh too, but I don’t think I’d be cruel enough to force Josh to be in my life.

Liza needs to give Josh time. Maybe, down the line, they can be friends, but right now, it’s disastrous. And will make for compelling TV.

But it will make for compelling TV.

Things are going much better with Kelsey and Zane. After another successful date, Kelsey is worried that things will turn sour with Zane after she signs one of his writers. Zane, however, is just more impressed with Kelsey. They make a beautiful couple and I’m fully supportive of this relationship.

Considering this episode is called “The Gift of the Maggie,” there actually isn’t too much Maggie in it. However, for every minute that she is, Debi Mazar kills it. It’s just so satisfying to see her stab the painting she gave Montana with a switchblade.

Overall, “The Gift of the Maggie,” is a good episode that is a little light on plot, but still entertains. The best part of the episode is when Josh calls Montana Amy, signaling that they are done for good. The lingering look Charles gives Liza at the end is pretty great as well.

Final Notes:

  • The cigar scene between Kelsey and Zane is pretty smokin’. Sorry, couldn’t resist the pun.
  • The whole conversation between Josh and Liza is almost unbearable to watch. It boggles me how invested I am in these two characters.
  • Michael Urie and Margaret Colin are fun guest stars.
  • I’m still impressed with Kelsey’s outfits this season but still have not seen Liza in one that I’ve liked.
  • Can we please get more Diana ASAP?
