Killjoys Review: A Skinner, Darkley (Season 3 Episode 2)

Killjoys, Reviews

On Killjoys Season 3 Episode 2, “A Skinner, Darkley,” it’s Dutch and D’av’s turn to have a boring storyline. Sorry, the training of the nerds just is not entertaining. Sure, Dutch and D’av have some great banter and one-liners, but it does not save the entire storyline.

It’s too soon to fully judge the newbies, but the fact that I only know one of their names — Zeph — isn’t a good sign. Oh, one of them is Alec from Continuum with some intense hair. I miss that show…

Anyways, the “mission” is boring aside from the fun video game twist, and the nerds aren’t instantly loveable, but they aren’t beyond annoying either, so let’s take that as a win.

What do you think of the new recruits to Team Awesome Force?

Now, let’s break down this Olli is Clara twist.

It comes of nowhere. While it definitely earns points for causing jaws to drop, I’m not sure how I feel about it.

Before starting Killjoys Season 3 Episode 1, there was the assumption that we would pick up with Johnny and Clara off on their own adventures doing who knows what. Instead, we pick up with Johnny searching for Clara.

Okay, so technically Johnny finds Clara; she’s just Olli now. Olli has no memories of Johnny or of being Clara, which prevents this twist from being emotionally satisfying.

Johnny does not really find Clara.

We fell in love with Clara back on Killjoys Season 2 Episode 1. Learning that Olli is technically Clara doesn’t mean we stop missing Clara because she’s still gone.

Olli’s a completely different person than Clara. Yes, Olli is amazing, and she’s a lot of fun, but she isn’t Clara. It still feels like Clara is missing, and so the twist does not lead us to a happy reunion between Johnny and Clara.

What the twist does is make the skinning process hit a little closer to home and allow Johnny to return to Dutch and D’av.

Johnny: I’m not going to lie, I would make sweet, sweet love to him, and he would like it. [laughs] I am a sexy wolf man!

Speaking of the skinning process, I still have some questions. I don’t know if it was just because I was still trying to wrap my head around the Olli is Clara twist, but the reasons behind skinning people haven’t exactly clicked in my mind yet.

There’s a lot of information thrown our way at once, and as we attempt to process why Niko is skinning people (and how it benefits hackmods), we’re also jumping back into the Dutch and D’av nerd training. This is definitely an episode that will benefit from a rewatch.

Unfortunately, thanks to Niko’s detailed description, the technical aspect of skinning makes perfect sense, and can I just say, yuck.

Before diving into the reunion, can we just take a moment to appreciate the badass-ness that is Niko? She’s an amazing villain, and if she were to pop back up later on this season, I’d be okay with that.

The team is back together, finally!!

I’m still a little emotional over Johnny and Dutch’s reunion. Honestly, what would have made the reunion so much sweeter is if we saw a Dutch/Johnny message at the beginning.

Those messages on Killjoys Season 3 Episode 1 broke me in the best way, and I would have loved to see more of them. However, I’ll gladly take Dutch and Johnny being on the same ship again.

I cannot wait to see how Johnny reacts to the new nerds. Are you glad the team is back together again?
