The Bachelorette Recap: UnbeLEEvable Drama (Season 13 Episode 4)

Recaps, The Bachelorette, Uncategorized

With two full weeks having passed since we last caught up with Rachel, this week’s episode of The Bachelorette opens just where we left off: with Eric continuing to shout about his name being “on the mouths” of the other contestants. But though we were left to believe he was the one behaving poorly, the tables quickly turn.

It turns out Lee is the true troublemaker in this situation. He confesses to the camera that he is having fun messing with the others in the mansion. Even Dean, the season’s biggest sweetheart, calls Lee “a b*tch” — do we need further proof that the guy’s no good?

When Lee interrupts Kenny’s alone time with Rachel after having already chatted with her earlier in the night, Kenny decides to take action. He initiates a conversation, confronting Lee about why he insists on interrupting others. According to Kenny, he thought Lee was his friend but he “continuously proves him wrong.”

Unfortunately for all of the men, Rachel overhears the shouting between Kenny and Lee from the other room and blames all of the guys for any drama going on. And her disappointment in them soon leads to a larger confession of all the pressure she’s been feeling in this position.

Her emotions get the best of her and she decides to cut the cocktail party short, sending Chris Harrison to alert the men and send them straight to an early rose ceremony.

Ultimately, though, both Kenny and Lee remain, and it’s Diggy, Bryce, and Brady who must say their goodbyes.

Taking Love to New Heights

With this emotional evening behind them, the group heads to Hilton Head, South Carolina, where all of the guys look forward to getting to know Rachel even more.

Everyone’s hoping for that coveted one-on-one, but it’s Dean who is awarded the first of the week. His card reads: “Our date is about to take off.”

The date starts out simple, as Rachel and Dean pop open a bottle of champagne while chilling atop the hood of a jeep. But overhead, a passing blimp gets closer and closer, until they can read the personal message along the side, inviting them onboard.

Try as he might to remain cool and collected, Dean is visibly PANICKED. This guy is definitely afraid of heights.

Despite his terror, Dean eventually pushes himself to get behind the wheel and assist the pilot, impressing Rachel (and no doubt surprising even himself).

Let’s not forget that Dean got off to an interesting, if not controversial, start this season when he introduced himself to Rachel by saying he was “ready to go black and never go back.” Though Rachel claims to have found his statement funny, many audience members did not. So can he truly redeem himself in the eyes of Bachelor Nation?

He can! Later in the evening, Dean shares the story of his mother’s struggle with breast cancer. Losing her, he says, was the hardest thing he’s ever had to face. And though her death was incredibly difficult on him, the years he spent with both parents made him excited to be a father himself.

In this moment, it’s clear that Dean’s young age (just 25!) and foolish first line are no indication of his maturity and outlook on life and love. Rachel, who is visibly smitten, grants him a much-deserved rose.

Can You Spell Gossip?

The week’s group date card reads: “I want to see who’s ready for commitment.” The only name not on the card is Jack Stone’s — which means he’s the lucky guy going on the next one-on-one. (Much to America’s surprise…)

But first, the rest of the men set sail on a big boat, where Rachel is also on board. They spend time playing games and showing off — stripping off their shirts, doing pushups, and holding a rap battle.

When the boat reaches it’s destination, the group finds an awaiting crowd. Chris Harrison is also present, of course, and informs them that they will be competing in a Spelling Bee.

First to be eliminated is Kenny, who misspells the word “champagne”. But the most humiliating attempt is certainly that of Eric, who spells “facade”: “physde.” Yes, really.

It all comes down to Josiah and Will (who we learn reads about 6 books a day at the mansion — swoon!). Josiah, unfortunately, takes the prize, despite annoying everyone with his arrogance throughout the event.

Jealous of his victory, Iggy decides to tell Rachel that Josiah “concerns” him. Though he may be right, the other men feel that, by making his time with Rachel about other people, Iggy himself is a big part of the problem. They’re correct.

Continuing the gossip trend, Lee uses his time with Rachel to accuse Kenny of having been aggressive toward him during last week’s cocktail party. And when Rachel confronts Kenny about it, all he can do is tell her it’s untrue.

Although the right thing for him to do is let it all go and hope Rachel trusts him, Kenny just can’t shake his feelings. He chooses to confront Lee yet again. But before the drama between them can unfold, the episode comes to a close.

Next week’s promo features an epic Kenny/Lee two-on-one! Will Rachel see through Lee’s evil and send him home, or will Kenny be the one sent packing? Share your predictions in the comments, and tune in to see how this showdown ends next Monday at 8/7c on ABC.
