The Originals Review: Haunter of Ruins (Season 4 Episode 3)

Reviews, The Originals

The Mikaelsons are trying to find new ways to define themselves and their futures, now that they are free of Marcel’s hold, on The Originals Season 4 Episode 3, “Haunter of Ruins.”

For Klaus, he’s trying to connect with his daughter, his future, and his hope for a life free of the pain and suffering of his past. He’s eager to give her the things that he could never have and become a better man for her.

Hope is his new start and it’s interesting to watch the great Niklaus Mikaelson, fearless hybrid and boogie man to all little vamps out there, nervous and scared of a little girl.

Seeing this caring, shy, and grounded Klaus is surreal and feels like a long time coming. Up to now, we’ve only seen glimpses of the type of man that Klaus could be. This time there’s no going back.

Klaus will embrace that light inside of himself for her, for his family, and for all those that believed in him when he couldn’t believe in himself.

For Hayley and Elijah, they’re allowing themselves to love. Elijah no longer has to pursue Klaus and try to save his soul. He’s free. And with that freedom he wants to be with Hayley.

Hayley returns the sentiment wholeheartedly and isn’t afraid to tell him how she feels. For too long she’s been fighting for all of them and hasn’t thought about herself. This is her moment to choose love for herself.

Of course things can never go perfect on The Originals and danger has found them, even when they’re tucked away from the world. Difference is that Hayley and Elijah are united, open, and honest about their needs and love for each other.

As much as shows love keeping couples apart, as if the well of ideas is suddenly going to dry up, a united front always wins the day.

The departure of Rebecca and Kol is sad but not surprising.

Kol is lost without Davina and Rebecca is still pursuing a life filled with love and a family of her own. Being a Mikaelson is a dangerous thing in this world. Why not make sure you have one watching your back as you explore/try to find love?

Unlike the rest of her siblings, Freya is letting fear define her.

She’s making herself a tree, an unmovable object between herself and those that would hurt her family. What she doesn’t see is that she is letting herself become ruthless, goal oriented, and single-minded like Dahlia used to be.

To Freya, the end justifies the means and she will do anything in her power to protect Hope from having a childhood like she did. And in a twisted kind of way I think Freya is also mad at Hope for not experiencing the world like she did.

Again, she’s twisting herself up and taking her first steps down Dahlia road.

Nothing good will come from Freya trying to destroy Marcel because he’s still part of their family. She might’ve never experienced it but the rest of her siblings have. Their anger at Marcel is tied with love and nothing can erase that.

The Originals Review: Haunter of Ruins (Season 4 Episode 3)

Marcel returns a bit of that love when he helps Vincent with the children and realizes that Hope is linked to them. He might be seething angry with their family for what they did to Davina but he will not let an innocent suffer because of it.

The Mikaelsons and Marcel are one step closer to forgiveness and moving forward together.

Remember, they’re not like us, and they never will be like us. A long life affords them many enemies and the ability to get past their anger and pain. Plus they’ve got this big and mysterious force preying on children.

If there’s anything that will bring them back together, it’s going to be that.

Additional Thoughts:
  • Kudos to Hayley for not telling Hope about all the horrible things that Klaus has done. One day she’ll find out the truth, but until then her dad is her fairytale prince and knight in shining armour. And Hayley didn’t do that for Klaus. She did that for her daughter. No kid deserves to have that kind of impression of her family so early in life.
  • We know that Hayley and Elijah have loved each other for a long time. It’s just nice to hear them say it and for them to find happiness with each other. It doesn’t happen often on this show and they’re not going to let it slip through their fingers.
  • I know a lot of people are worried that Klaus will want to be a “nuclear family” and break up Haylijah, but I’m not worried. If anything, he’s so proud of the fierce woman she has been these past couple of years and only wishes her the best with his brother as he gets to know his daughter. Basically, the only girl Klaus has time or space in his heart for is Hope.

Lyra is a TV and movie enthusiast. It all started on a dark night when she turned on Fox and fell in love with the X-Files. It was all history after that as she got lost in Doctor Who, The Marvel Verse and most recently everything DC. Her love for Doctor Who lead her to study abroad, where she fell into live-tweeting and the lovely explosion of fandom life that Tumblr is. Her main love for the summer (with a mega re-watch happening) is Arrow. When she isn’t sharing her love for TV and movies she’s writing fan-fiction, taking care of her family, and puttering around her kitchen.
