The Magicians Review: The Rattening (Season 2 Episode 11)

Reviews, The Magicians

The Magicians Season 2 Episode 11, “The Rattening,” is another episode full of pain for everyone involved.

Quentin and Julia have made their way down to the underworld to find Julia’s shade. But, that’s not the only shade they find; Alice’s shade is also sitting in the underworld, along with Julia’s.

This is nothing but an old wound being ripped open as Quentin looks at Alice’s shade. Sure, this is a little girl, but she’s still the woman he loves and hasn’t given up on.

Julia tries to do a good thing by snatching Alice’s shade instead of her own, but I don’t think that was the smartest choice. First off, they went and risked their lives so Julia could get her shade back not so she could steal Alice’s.

Quentin will never be over Alice, as long as he lives he will love that woman even if she isn’t herself anymore. Trying to put a shade inside of someone who wants it is hard enough, but to forcibly attach a shade to someone who doesn’t? That’s a whole other ball game.

In my opinion, they should have just taken Julia’s shade like planned. Bringing Alice back into all of the drama that Quentin is constantly in isn’t a good thing with Reynard still on the loose. Now, all of Quentin’s energy is going to be forced back to Alice.

Quentin had just started getting over Alice, and now we’re back to square one.

Meanwhile, Eliot has to deal with a crisis in Fillory as almost everyone in the castle has been turned into a rat. Then comes the double whammy – Margo admits that she’s the reason all of this is happening.

Had Margo told Eliot before now I think that it wouldn’t have blown up too much, but seeing as she only told Eliot the truth because she was spelled, I don’t think that’s going to happen.

After all, he did throw her in the dungeon, which is what she deserves. She has gone behind Eliot’s back way more in Fillory than she ever did back at Brakebills. I know she thought she was doing good, but I don’t necessarily like this side of Margo.

Penny and Kady are getting along better and better, still working on getting into the poison room. I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again – Penny and Kady are the best couple on the show. They’ve had their up and downs, but in the end, they always end up right back with each other.

Penny’s new supervisor is a tad bit fishy to me. Why would she want to help Penny get into the poison room at the library unless she had some sort of plan up her sleeve? She wouldn’t.

Penny and Kady both need inside of that room, but I don’t think they should get involved with the child. I feel like there’s something she’s hiding from them. I don’t trust her at this point.

“The Rattening” brings Julia, Quentin, Kady, and Penny that much closer to finally ending Reynard. At this point, I think it’s safe to say that if Reynard is defeated it will be in the season finale, which is only two episodes away.

Other Thoughts:

  • John taking a step towards helping extinguish his father is something that could set everything in the right motion.
  • What plan does Julia have with Alice’s shade? There has to be something else other than just making Quentin happy.
  • How can Eliot just be kicked out of Fillory? I wasn’t aware it worked that way.
  • The dragon is one of my favorite things about this episode.
