Girls Review: Latching (Season 6 Episode 10)
Girls Season 6 Episode 10, “Latching,” is the series finale and time jumps five months into the future to show us how Hannah is struggling with motherhood.
It’s a quiet finale for a series, but a decent one.
The episode opens with Marnie spooning a very pregnant Hannah. When Hannah wakes up, Marnie pitches to her that she should help her raise her baby. Seriously, Hannah has had so many offers of help.

Marnie is self-serving as always but we can understand why she doesn’t want to live “in her mom’s gym.” It really does seem like a terrible idea for hot-mess Marnie to help raise Hannah’s baby, but surprisingly, Marnie seems pretty helpful.
The most incredible thing about “Latching,” is that it actually makes us feel a teensy bit sorry for Marnie as Hannah just yells at her or flippantly holds up an empty milk box and waits to be handed another without a please or thank you.
It would definitely be annoying for Hannah to have Marnie around who swaddles the baby perfectly or who is constantly quoting books or statistics about breastfeeding, but hey, if there is no Marnie, then you’re definitely not sleeping in until eleven, Hannah.
By the way, the baby’s name is Grover (Paul-Louis’ name suggestion from “The Bounce”) and he is pretty much the cutest thing ever.
Much of “Latching” consists of Hannah’s frustration at not being able to breastfeed Grover. She feels like Grover hates her and therefore, feels sorry for herself and reverts back to selfish, bratty Hannah.
Even though this current season has shown us that Hannah is growing up, we still saw her the five previous seasons as a narcissist and someone who was ready to quit when things got too hard. As Loreen says point-blank, “You can’t get this tuition reimbursed or delete some guy’s phone number. This is for life.”
The Loreen-Hannah argument is the best of the episode. It’s real and raw, especially when Loreen almost laughs as she says to Hannah that she won’t even remember this because there will be much harder times ahead. We haven’t seen Loreen since “Gummies,” and it at least looks like she’s in a better place.

Loreen shouts all the things that we wish we could yell at Hannah and Hannah does a great job at sounding like an obnoxious kid as she storms off.
Hannah runs into a teenage girl on her walk, who is running away from a “monster.” The girl ends up explaining that the monster is not a fiddly stepdad like Hannah thinks, but her mother who is making her do her homework.
Hannah immediately takes the side of the mother and tells her that there is probably a million other things her mother would like to do other than yell at her about homework. But she does it because she’s her mom. We can see that Hannah grows up again in that moment and that she realizes that she is being just as petty as the teenage girl is.
It’s a turning point.
The biggest problem with the scene though is that it feels contrived. Like, of course, Hannah has this big moment after she runs out of the house with a teenager whose actions mirrors her own. It’s not as unrealistic as that job she got (or beautiful house) but still, it’s a little too on the nose.
What is great though, are the scenes that follow. When Hannah returns, there is no yelling, no accusations, no arguing. Loreen just simply hands Hannah a glass of wine.
The final shot is probably the best as we finally see the full transformation of Hannah Horvath. The look on Hannah’s face is amazing. Lena Dunham killed it this season with facial expressions.
And that’s it. The end.
We may speculate as to what will happen next for these girls, but overall, Season 6 has been highly satisfying. The characters we care most have found some happiness.
Although “Latching” doesn’t quite feel like the best episode to end a series on, mostly because it is quiet and may not be that memorable ten years down the line, the decision not to tie up everything nicely and without conflict is appreciated.
Last Thoughts:
- Thank you, Hannah, for verbalizing what we all think when Marnie sings.
- “I’m sorry we didn’t make any jam. I’m sorry you didn’t meet, like, a hot woodworker.”
- I’m definitely in Hannah’s camp with her disdain over Marnie’s desire to go see a jazz trio at a wine bar with cheese flights.
- It would not be a series finale of Girls without seeing Hannah naked a couple of times.
- I’m still hoping that after Paul-Louis does his own growing up that he’ll want to be a part of Grover’s life.
