The Flash Review: Abra Kadabra (Season 3 Episode 18)

Reviews, The Flash

Barry faces off against another villain from the future in The Flash Season 3 Episode 18, “Abra Kadabra.”

After last weeks fun musical episode, The Flash is back to its standard episode format. Yet another bad guy comes from the future to say, I know you, Barry Allen. Of course, he has information that could possibly save Iris.

Everything comes back to saving Iris, which seems so pointless. I really do not believe the show will kill her off. This makes me get so tired of them showing her dying at least once per episode.

They are really getting their money’s worth out of that short scene where Savitar kills Iris.

The threat of Iris dying motivates Joe to selfishly make a deal with Abra Kadabra to tell him who Savitar is. This is another time when someone acts on their own without consulting the team.

Caitlin gets injured by Abra Kadabra’s explosive exit. Since she is the only doctor they decide that she will be awake to remove the shrapnel to tell them how to operate. She opts to stay awake so they can jerk pieces of metal out of her!

Julian, who is a medic with no experience, is who they pick to operate. Not Barry, the fastest man alive, who could at least make the surgery over in a second!

Caitlin makes it through this but later has complications. Julian jerks off the necklace so her meta powers can heal her. Why don’t they take the necklace off and put it on before she transforms into Killer Frost will remain a mystery.

It seems Caitlin can’t do anything to escape her destiny to be Killer Frost. Even though she says she will rather die than become Killer Frost.

The storyline that is unfolding with Caitlin has parallels to what happened on Arrow with Laurel Lance.

Caitlin survives surgery with no obvious problems and so did Laurel. Then Caitlin seizes and dies, so did Laurel. They save Caitlin by letting her meta-human powers take over but she is back as an evil version of herself. Laurel comes back to Arrow as Black Siren, the evil Earth 2 doppelgänger of Laurel.

Caitlin’s struggles with her meta-human powers continue to confound me. There are so many metas who get powers and continue to be themselves, yet, when Caitlin uses her powers she becomes evil.

I don’t understand why she can’t embrace her powers and use them for good! Cisco, Barry, and Wally did not become evil when they discovered and used their powers.

Also, Barry proclaims he can save Iris! Which he does almost every episode. This time he is going to go to the future to figure out how. Apparently, Barry will never learn that time traveling causes major issues and should really be avoided!

Unfortunately, we will have to wait until April 25 find out how this goes wrong.

Quick Thoughts:

  • I missed HR in this episode!
  • “Gypsy, darling!” I will always love Cisco.
  • I just want Cisco to get a love interest that sticks around!
  • It is nice to see Julian more involved with the team this episode.
  • Wally doesn’t get to do anything this hour.
  • I caught a ton of references in this episode, from Monty Python to Lord of the Rings.

Allie is a civil engineer who annoys her friends by trying to make them care about shows they don't watch. She is always obsessing over TV shows, watching as much Netflix and Hulu (they have all the good, old teen dramas!), and trying to find ways to entertain her dog while she watches TV. Loves Gilmore Girls, The X-Files, Dawson's Creek, Lost, and way too many shows to list!
