Supergirl Review: Star-Crossed (Season 2 Episode 16)
Supergirl Season 2 Episode 16 is a bit of a mixed bag, in some parts the story is delightful and satisfying and other plot points and character reactions have us scratching our heads.
Winn’s relationship with Lyra finally comes to a head when she dupes him in order steal art and save her brother. We all knew that it wouldn’t always be paradise for these two whirlwind lovebirds, so it was only a matter of time before she pulled the rug out from underneath him.
Lyra: You should’ve run when you had the chance.
Winn: I was a theater geek not a track star!
What’s unexpected is that their relationship might actually survive this. After she comes clean and Winn goes above and beyond to save both Lyra and her brother the two of them resolve their relationship. Whether or not she sticks around remains to be seen, but if she leaves her relationship with Winn remains on good terms.

What works really well about this plot line is that it pairs up Maggie and Alex with Winn and James. These four are so much fun together, even when we only get them together for a few moments at a time. I would honestly watch a whole show about these four catching alien bad guys.
What absolutely doesn’t work is the way that the narrative tries to parallel this story between Winn and Lyra with the relationship between Kara and Mon El.Yes both Lyra and Mon El lie and hurt Winn and Kara in the process, but Lyra lies to protect someone she loves, Mon El had been lying for entirely selfish reasons.
This relationship has been a repetitive disaster since it’s inception. Week after week we’ve seen them bounce back and forth, from will they/won’t they drama to happy couple at one end of the episode only to spend the rest of it fighting.
In “Star-Crossed” Supergirl Season 2 Episode 16, it’s finally revealed that Mon El has been lying to her the entire time he’s known her. He’s actually the Prince of Daxam, which the audience has already become aware of anytime between the aliens on Slaver’s moon bowing to him, or his extravagant parents rolling up planetside last week.
He admits that he doesn’t know if he would have ever told Kara the truth, and she finally, gloriously breaks up with him. Mon El may very well want to become a better man, but he needs to do it on his own. He needs to become a better person for the sole reason of becoming a better person. As it stands his sole purpose for changing has been to get Kara to love him.
It’s one dimensional and manipulative, and played out.
If only his parents had actually sent him home to Daxam. At least for now Kara has broken up with him, even if we have to keep putting up with them, perhaps we’ll get to see them actually being individual people again. By lying to her, Mon El took away all of Kara’s agency in their relationship, and in making her story entirely about him the Supergirl writers have virtually done the same to her character.

If Mon El is going to stick around, the show needs to give Kara her life back before we’ll ever like him.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
- M’Gann was given the option to go home and make her planet a better place and she did it, thereby leaving the show. Meanwhile, Mon El was given the chance to go back, was even encouraged to by Kara and he stayed against her wishes.
- The most unbelievable thing about Kara and Mon El’s relationship is that Alex is so pro-Mon El. There’s no way Alex Danvers would encourage Kara to stay with someone who makes her sad and upset over and over.
- Alex and Maggie were only together in this episode for maybe a total of 5 minutes, but the fact that they continue to be intimate and healthy and happy while all the other relationships are in chaos, is pretty great.
- Teri Hatcher is amazing, lets keep her forever and send Mon El home.
- Cat Grant would never have let this happen.
- There were tons of fun musical references in this episode, be sure to check out this week’s musical episode of The Flash as well for more super fun!
