The Mick Review: The Country Club (Season 1 Episode 7)

Reviews, The Mick

The kids finally get to leave the mansion on The Mick Season 1 Episode 7, “The Country Club.”

The Mick’s world has been pretty small so far.  The kids have seemingly been under house arrest since the pilot, but now we finally get a chance to see them interacting with the outside world.

In a pretty solid episode, Mickey, Alba, and the Pembertons head to the country club after the family’s money manager reveals that Oliver Fishbourne, a gossip columnist and fellow club member, ripped the family to shreds in the New York Insider.

Sabrina is determined to get him to retract his story. Chip tries to reestablish the family’s standing, and Mickey just wants a good plate of nachos.

Chip teams up with their country club’s version of Al Czervic. Jerry Berlin is a wealthy construction guy who decides to help Chip change the conversation about his family by telling everyone that the kid hit a hole-in-one.

Chip nearly gets caught, but Jerry offers the only witnesses a free patio to keep their mouths shut (in exchange for Mickey’s phone number).

Thomas Barbusca really shines when he gets to play a hurt, insecure kid and an over-the-top entitled jerk, and fortunately he gets to do both in this episode.  Jerry is right when he says Chip is scary when he takes down the club president by telling him to “shut his gaping pie hole.”

Meanwhile, Sabrina and Mickey team up again for the A-story.  These two are consistently great together.  Sabrina’s stuck-up attitude pairs well with Mickey’s rough edges and the two women snipe at each other with fantastic precision. However, it would be nice to see what the writers can do with other pairs of characters.

This week, the pair works with Alba and Ben to pull off a caper.

The crew comes up with a precise plan to frame Oliver as a pool pooper.  Unfortunately, they rely on Alba, who is too drunk to help, and Ben, who is too shy to provide them with the poop they need to pull off their plan.

Without a fresh load from Ben, Sabrina agrees to use fudge from the kitchen as a stand-in (Though, any Caddyshack fan would tell you a Baby Ruth works just as well).

When things don’t go as planned, Sabrina ends up falling into the pool with the “poop,” accidentally recreating a childhood trauma.

Mickey, of course, takes the opportunity to chuck hot sauce in Oliver’s face – because it burns really bad.

  •  “The Pemberton Brand seems to be fugitives and pool poopers.”
  • This is how you order a service at a spa: “You heard him! Pineapple the son of a bitch.”
  • Drunk Alba Rocks. “Wait, so we are going to put Ben’s poop inside this gossip columnist?”

What did you think of this episode of The Mick?

What trouble do you think the gang will get into when they head to their 9th Ave apartment in NYC? How do you think the Pembertons will lose the remaining 70% of their wealth? Would you have gone with the seaweed wrap or the pineapple scrub?
