High Potential Season 2 Episode 17 Review: Second Sunday

High Potential, Reviews

All our suspicions are confirmed with that kiss. We suspected that there was some sexual tension between Wagner and Morgan from the moment we met the new captain, and High Potential Season 2 Episode 17, “Second Sunday.”

We are surprised that the series doesn’t wait to drag out this romance. Instead, it happens right at an important time in the season. We’re near the end of Season 2, so this kiss may tie into whatever happens on the season finale.

Perhaps Wagner and Morgan decide to explore their attraction fully, but Roman finally makes an appearance? We shall know soon enough.

“Second Sunday” finally gives us more information about the ominous captain. We have been slowly finding out new details about him, such as his intense relationship with his father. Now, we know he horrendously lost his fiancée.

Warner remains an odd addition to the team. He just doesn’t have the natural chemistry of the rest of the group, but his romance with Morgan could be what High Potential needs to make us care a lot more about him.

It’s still Wagner’s first season, so we have to give him time to ease into his role. Nonetheless, all the new information about him doesn’t endear us to him. Steve Howey has been on many shows and has been fun on most of them.

I am used to seeing him in comedies, so it takes some adjustment to imagine him as this tough detective. He almost feels too serious with this group. Karadec’s seriousness plays well because he almost has the straight man and funny man dynamic with Morgan.

His seriousness makes Morgan’s whackiness stand out more. They play off one another. We already have that with Karadec and Morgan, so it just doesn’t quite work with Wagner.

However, the potential romance between Wagner and Morgan could allow for this opposites-attract dynamic to play out.

“Second Sunday” also takes High Potential into action movie territory. We see a heist, a planned major crime, and a shootout. The budget for this episode must have been large.

We don’t compliment this ABC  TV show enough on how it keeps the crimes of the week interesting. It could be a small crime like a murder at a gym, a ghost story, or an art heist. You never know with the series, and that’s why it’s so entertaining.

Even if all the cases don’t land, they remain entertaining.

“Second Sunday” is an interesting penultimate episode and makes us think that Wagner plays a huge part in the finale, professionally and personally. He’s an all right character who needs further development.

Stray Thoughts
  • I like that Lucia is becoming such a key part of the story. She will be missed when she leaves.
  • I stand by my thoughts on the Roman storyline dragging too long.
  • I forgot Ludo existed, so it was nice to see him with the kids.
  • The show successfully makes me worry for a second that Morgan will be shot.
