Jane The Virgin Review: Chapter Fifty-Five (Season 3 Episode 11)
A lot has changed after the three-year time jump, and I’m not quite sure how I feel about it.
Following the devastating death of beloved Michael Cordero, Jane The Virgin‘s three-year time jump gives us a new and rather interesting start for Jane, Rafael, Petra, Rogelio and Xiomara.
In the opening of the episode, we get a short glimpse of Jane still grieving and in total depressed mode, two weeks after Michael’s death. It’s tear-jerkingly sad to watch, but at the same time, I’m so glad Jane has Alba on her side comforting her in the most relatable way ever.
Alba knows what it’s like to be a widow, and that moment between her and her granddaughter is touching.
“Your life will be beautiful again, just in different ways.”
Abuelita Alba to the rescue, indeed.

However, for fans, Michael’s death was a week ago, and not two weeks ago as is it on the show, in the opening of the episode at least. Michael was a huge part of Jane’s life, and I wish we were able to see her and everyone around her grieve his death.
Like, didn’t Rogelio adore Michael too?
I’m not saying I prefer tears and sadness and a gloomy day throughout the whole episode, but I feel like the moving on from Michael’s death is a little fast for me, heck give me a chance to grieve too!
Mateo is a big boy now, a very cute and adorable boy who has some behavioral issues. Jane and Rafael trying to discipline Mateo is something almost all parents of young kids go through once in a while, and I’m glad these two know how to work well together as a team in this three-year time jump.
Speaking of Rafael, that beard and that scruff sure looks good on him! I’m definitely digging it. Do you?
Also, Zen Rafael is a pretty chill and more relaxed Rafael. I like it. Though, I wonder how his time in the slammer was.
I cannot believe he went to prison. I’m curious if they will be doing some flashbacks as to how he spent his time there. It should be interesting.
Friendly reminder to the Jane The Virgin writers: Please don’t bring Rafael and Jane together as romantic couple in the near future.
It will dismantle everything that was beautiful and real between Michael and Jane, as if he was some sort of obstacle or something. If anything, wait on it.
Rafael and Jane are doing so well being teammates. co-parenting Mateo, and still being comfortable with each other. They are doing fine – I like their dynamic, and I hope it says like this for a while.
Xiomara moves in with Bruce, and Rogelio’s relationship with Darci becomes a sham.
That wedding scene fooled me there, not going to lie! I didn’t really care too much about their scenes in this episode, but it looks like Xiomara and Rogelio are on good terms with each other.
Petra takes control of her life now as she recreates the Marbella and ups her parenting with Anna and Ellsie (they changed it from Elsa! Shocker!). Petra is being badass as ever and taking charge, the way that she knows how.
This time jump isn’t all that bad, but it isn’t all that good either, if you know what I mean.
I appreciate the show having the characters grow and continuing on with their lives, but I wish the jump wasn’t right after Michael’s death.
I wanted to see the grieving process of Jane, how she was coping with it, what happened during those tough times – all of that. The time jump feels a little rushed. It would have fit in well if it was two episodes after Michael’s death.
There are moments within the episode where Michael pops up into Jane’s head – at least that shows that Michael is always apart of Jane’s life, and he is helping her move forward.
Sigh, Michael.
He really is gone.
Stray thoughts:
- I love Jane’s short new haircut, it suits her.
- Another murder at the Marbella?! Really? And it’s SCOTT’S BODY. Who killed him?! Where is Anezka? Hmm…
- I’m glad to see that Jane is flourishing with her writing.
- Rafael helping Jane go up to talk about Michael in her novel was my favorite part of the episode.
- Rafael has a new girlfriend and she was totally non-existent, I even forgot what her name was.
