Grey's Anatomy, Reviews

You know something? Grey’s Anatomy is as good as it’s ever been.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 Episode 11, “Jukebox Hero,” includes a hospital feud, an emotional case, and a surprise (happy) ending. Really, what else could you ask for?

The Feud

Something tells me that Eliza Minnick won’t always be the villain, but for now, I’m happy to see the other attendings working together to freeze her out.

It’s nice to see the doctors work together on anything, but their support of Richard is particularly satisfying.

So is the moment when Richard walks off with the pen to keep Minnick from updating the board.

For Bailey, this is all much more complicated. She’s also being seen as the villain here, even though Jackson and the rest of the doctors agree their real problem is Minnick, not Bailey. Still, Richard and the others believe this all started with her.

They don’t know what we know — what Bailey knows. It’s Catherine who started it all, and the way she’s gone about it is underhanded. I’m worried for how this will affect Richard long-term.

The Patient

There was no way it was going to be as simple as a woman in labor arriving to the hospital by cab to deliver her baby. Using video chat to communicate with the doctors — and allow them to watch the car crash before their very eyes is kind of genius.

The injuries to the pregnant mother are only made worse by Arizona’s suggestion that she prop up her legs — a suggestion that makes perfect sense if you assume they’ll actually make it to the hospital.

And of course, in true Grey’s Anatomy fashion, the person who caused the crash is the baby’s father. He was also trying to get to the hospital as fast as he could.

It could certainly be argued that this is too coincidental or that the show relies on these kinds of coincidences for drama too often, but for me, that’s the sort of thing that defines Grey’s Anatomy

While the baby and the father come out okay, that’s not the case for the mom. It’s heartbreaking, and Arizona can’t help but feel she’s partly to blame. The father feels that way too, and the two of them manage to have a nice moment where they talk each other out of shouldering that blame.

Thanks to Ben, the cab driver goes home without knowing the fate of the mother, but still feeling like a hero. All the cab driver wanted to do was to be a hero and help the woman get to the hospital, and instead, as he says, he become surrounded by people dying.

He is actually the one who saved that guy’s life by getting Ben’s attention, and it’s an act of compassion for Warren to make sure he knows that before he leaves.

Where is Alex?

Meanwhile, Meredith is doing her best detective work to find her friend, assuming that he’s in some jail after taking a plea. She’s worried sick, and so is Arizona — especially since she just spent a night in a prison working with a patient.

Oh, and speaking of satisfying moments, Arizona telling off Minnick after she mentions that the chief of pediatric surgery “went up the river” is one of the best things about this entire episode.

After a long day of searching, Meredith goes home and literally crashes into Alex on the bed — he’s been sleeping there all day.

Cue the happy tears!

After all of that, Alex was home, right where he should be.

We don’t have answers yet as to how that’s the case. Maybe he decided not to take the plea after all thanks to Meredith’s voicemails, which means he still has to wait for trial.

But judging by DeLuca’s reaction to Arizona when she talks about Alex being gone, I have another guess as to what’s happened.

Alex isn’t the only one who would make a sacrifice to keep Jo’s secrets from coming out. DeLuca could just have easily solved that problem by dropping the charges against Alex altogether.

I think — I hope — that’s what happened.

Other thoughts:

  • The other person who’s gone missing is Amelia, and it turns out, she’s been hiding out at Stephanie’s place. I hope that won’t last long.
  • The news broke this week that Jerrika Hinton (Stephanie Edwards) is going to be leaving the show, and that disappoints me. Her character has grown so much, and now I’m just going to be thinking about how she might exit.
  • If I ever need surgery done on my face, I really hope it’s someone with experience as opposed to someone who has only ever fixed a hand. Just saying.
