Emerald City Review: The Villain That’s Become (Season 1 Episode 9)

Emerald City, Reviews

Emerald City hits us with an impressive episode this week.

Emerald City Season 1 Episode 9, “The Villain That’s Become,” is, by far, the most interesting this show has ever been. It hits hard, fast, and brings all of the series’ major plotlines to a head.

First, we have Tip and West, who are the sweet relationship that no one saw coming. West is so charmingly maternal, even when she’s failing at it, that you can not help but love her by now.

Despite knowing that it will never work, she allows Tip to present himself to the witches as a boy. She willingly puts herself on the line for him because she understands how important it is for Tip to be who he truly is, not who everyone remembers or believes him to be.

In turn, when it all goes south, as West predicted it would, Tip takes a bullet for his Mistress and takes the form of a girl — a girl with a surprising amount of commanding power and authority.

I’m really not sure where this confidence came from, but Tip has always had guts. Maybe the magic coursing through his veins and the return of his memories helped to push him toward being the leader he was always meant to be.

Also, since he has magic and is the rightful ruler of Oz, does this make Tip the true Wizard of Oz?

Hmm…

Then there’s Jack and Langwidere, and so much about their strange, twisted relationship is explained when we learn that she has never really been human and, therefore, perhaps, has never been capable of love — at least, not in any human sense.

It’s horrible when Jack discovers that the girl he fell for never really existed. That’s a lot to drop on a boy when he is already mourning the fact that he accidentally caused her death. Now, he has to find a way to cope with the idea that she never existed at all, and what her being an automaton says about him.

Jack no longer sees himself as human. This poor kid has endured far more trauma than anyone deserves. Here’s hoping that things start looking up for Jack as the season comes to a close.

If Jane does repair Langwidere, it will be gut wrenching to see how these two misfits move forward. Hopefully she does get repaired, because I want to see the look on the Wizard’s face when she comes back to life, so to speak.

Speaking of the Wizard: someone needs to shoot that man. It’s as simple as that. He is quite possibly one of the most irritating characters on television right now, and I really need him to not exist any more.

With any luck, Dorothy will finally prove useful and will use her Stone Giant to make my dreams come true.

Fingers crossed.
