Shadowhunters Review: Day of Wrath (Season 2 Episode 4)

Reviews, Shadowhunters

Shadowhunters Season 2 Episode 4, “Day of Wrath,” hikes the death toll up as we see three friends/family members die at the hands of Valentine and a demon in the Institute.

Dealing with a demon in the first place is not easy, but dealing with a demon who can hide from shadowhunters? That’s a whole new level of difficult.

Lydia being in charge of the Institute while a demon attack goes down is not a good thing, especially when two people die inside while she’s in charge. Now, Aldertree can use this against her and make sure she never takes control again.

On the plus, Lydia gets to join in on the action and show viewers, once again, how fierce she is. If only she were fierce enough to kill the demon before it can attach to another host.

I’m not sad about Joeclyn’s death, not in the slightest. Maybe it’s because I never read the books and got attached to her character in that way, but I’m glad she’s gone. From what we did see on screen, she’s been nothing but manipulative.

Jocelyn hid Clary from the shadowhunters world, made Magnus wipe her memories, tried to kill Jace, acted like Simon wasn’t a kid she’d seen grow up after finding out was a vampire, and has consistently been against everything Clary has been trying to do.

The only reason I’m even slightly sad about Jocelyn’s death is Luke. Luke was the one right by her side for the past eighteen years, helped her through everything with Clary, and never made her do anything alone. Jocelyn was Luke’s person, and I think he will take her death even harder than Clary.

Speaking of Clary, I have to give her so many props because had I just seen my mother dead on the floor, and known that it was Alec that had killed her, I don’t know what I would do.

In situations such as this, it’s understandable to lose control, as I would have. Instead, Clary puts Alec on the side burner and goes to business on finding the demon.

Not that Alec could control what he was doing while under the effects of the demon, but it’s a further blow to have Jocelyn’s death be at the hands of Alec. The one person who has been against her at the institute since day one.

Meanwhile, Aldertree and Jace are being jumped by Valentine and his henchmen. Aldertree is so sure that Jace is a traitor to the Clave, so he sentences him to life imprisonment. What does Aldertree get in return? Jace is saving his life.

Hopefully, even a remote thought of Jace being a traitor has left Aldertree’s mind. He risked his life and went against his father to save Aldertree’s life when he could’ve just left and been safe again. And please know, I’m using the word “safe” very loosely.

Shadowhunters Review: Day of Wrath (Season 2 Episode 4)
SHADOWHUNTERS – “Day of Wrath” – Freeform/ Ben Mark Holzberg

My favorite part of the episode, by far, is the interactions between Simon, Magnus, and Raphael. Simon and Raphael are still in a fight, but Magnus is just the person to end all of that.

The hunt for Camille has driven a wedge in-between Raphael and Simon, but with her now being in the hands of the Clave, hopefully, they’ll make up.

Magnus sending Camille to the Clave very obviously hurt, but he knows it’s for the best. Camille may have been that rock to Magnus and saved his life hundreds of years ago, but that doesn’t excuse her actions right now.

Downworlders are Magnus’ family. He is the one that they go to in a time of need because they know that he will help them. If, and when, Aldertree decides to go after Magnus, he’s going to be in for a rude awakening.

For my last thought, can we stop with Jace/Clary? I mean, come on. How are you going to continue teasing a relationship between them when they’re brother and sister?

This alone makes me believe even more that Jace isn’t Jonathan. I know Shadowhunters has some areas where they aren’t the smartest but promoting incest? I honestly don’t believe that’s something that they would do.

But, if them being brother and sister is a real fact, and they’re still promoting that relationship? Disgusting.

“Day of Wrath” sets up a new, interesting storyline for Clary to dive into with her mother’s death, and I look forward to seeing it play out.

Other Thoughts:

  1. R.I.P. Raj, Jocelyn, and Hodge.
  2. Izzy hinted at Raj’s death, so it wasn’t a big shock.
  3. I get Simon wants to have a good relationship with his mother, but he needs to stop contacting her. It just makes things worse.
