The Vampire Diaries Review: Detoured On Some Random Backwoods Path to Hell (Season 8 Episode 6)
#SterolineJuneWedding may be put on hold indefinitely after The Vampire Diaries Season 8 Episode 6.
On “Detoured On Some Random Backwards Path to Hell,” Damon and Stefan agree to literally sell their souls to the Devil, Alaric unleashes his inner Liam Neeson, and Steroline puts the brakes on their impending nuptials.
It’s impossible to say where we go from here. With Sybil backstabbing her sister, Damon and Stefan are now to act as replacements in serving Cade for an eternity.
Damon has been moving further and further down the rabbit hole and now he’s determined to take Stefan with him. Despite Damon’s willingness to go along with Sybil, I think he also willingly turns himself over in order to save the twins.
At least that is my hope. I don’t want to think Damon has lost everything good about him, but it’s hard to say.
Of course Stefan and his hero hair can’t allow the twins to be pawned off to the Devil. He’s willing to do anything to save Caroline and Alarics’ girls, even if that means sacrificing himself to do it.
So if Damon and Stefan are to be servants to Cade, does that mean they are to inherit new powers? What kind of bidding will he require from them?
What’s certain is that Stefan and Caroline may never see their wedding day. I don’t blame Caroline for her needing to push Stefan away as she searches for her daughters. As much as she loves Stefan, she knows deep down that his love for Damon can get in the way.
Stefan has tried time and time again to save his brother, but he now putting the lives of Caroline’s daughters first. As Caroline puts the ring back on her finger, you know the devastation that is about to follow.
Stefan has 24 hours left before he must turn himself over to Cade, and he wants to spend his remaining hours of freedom with Caroline. So once he turns himself over, will he become Ripper Stefan? I can’t imagine he will be able to do the Devil’s bidding and hold onto his humanity.

We have no clue how the rules work now. Matt and Alaric take it upon themselves to see some justice done and to spill some blood. Damon is staked and killed in the closing moments, but we all know this isn’t going to stick.
Frankly, I find it extremely annoying to end an episode in such dramatic fashion only to be followed by a promo for the next installment where we see Damon is very much alive. There’s no dramatic tension hanging in the air if we know Damon will somehow make it through.
I guess we will find out how Damon’s survival works. I’m guessing now that he and Stefan have been promised to Cade, they are now impervious to death. Or maybe death is a part of the transformation into Cade’s servants.
It’s no secret Matt despises vampires, but Alaric was Damon’s drinking buddy. I absolutely hate how this once fantastic bromance has been staked to death. Obviously Alaric’s alliance has shifted since he had children. I don’t expect him to put Damon’s life ahead of his daughters’ lives.
However, there is something really vindictive about his and Matt’s attack on Damon. Alaric even states that he has been waiting all day to kill someone.

I also hate how Alaric treats Caroline as they search for the twins. Caroline is not biologically their mother, but she is in every other way. She carried them, gave birth to them, has been raising them, and loving them.
Alaric throwing the fact they are Jo’s children in Caroline’s face is hurtful. I’m glad she finally stands up for herself and tells Alaric off. Sadly, she also comes to the conclusion that he needs to take the girls away so they can be safe from all the drama that follows her around.
The only bright spot to Alaric’s behavior is him getting to channel his inner Liam Neeson. I swear the conversation he has with Seline on the phone could be in the next Taken film.
Extra Thoughts and Questions
- Does Seline really think she can just make things right with Sybil? Sybil’s betrayal is expected, and now Seline’s soul is destined for the bad place.
- What exactly does Sybil have planned next? Something tells me she wants to stick around to be with Damon.
- With all the drama, it’s nice to see Enzo push through all the mind control and manipulation in order to get back to Bonnie. Please don’t ruin these two for us!!!
