The Vampire Diaries Review: Coming Home Was A Mistake (Season 8 Episode 5)
Tyler Lockwood is finally laid to rest on The Vampire Diaries Season 8 Episode 5, titled “Coming Home Was A Mistake.”
However, there isn’t too much time to mourn as Bonnie goes to the ultimate extreme to save Enzo, Stefan makes another effort to get through to Damon, and Seline’s cover is blown.
Bonnie and Ezno’s relationship has been put through the wringer this season. Never one to give up, Bonnie decides the only way to get Enzo to flip his switch is to make him confront his ultimate fear… being abandoned.
By setting the cabin on fire with both of them trapped inside, Bonnie is willing to give up her own life so that Enzo can see and feel everything he is about to lose. The move is incredibly risky, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
Luckily, Enzo is able to flip his switch and get her out of the cabin. Still, the magic candle keeps him stuck inside.
Even when safe outside the burning cabin, Bonnie isn’t willing to leave him trapped to die.
Running back in and putting the flame out with her own hand is another sign just how much she loves him. With both of them safe outside the cabin, Bonnie and Enzo are able to have a romantic reunion.
Everything about this pairing brings me joy. I never would have guessed they would become my favorite couple to watch, but they took me by surprise, and I want them to get a happy ending.

Stefan is trying to get Damon to flip his switch, but this struggle can’t keep going on. Even though killing Tyler is horrible, Damon has killed plenty of other people. Stefan still believes Damon can come back from this.
Unfortunately, Damon’s constant cry for help is not enjoyable to watch.
How many more times are we supposed to endure Damon almost making a breakthrough, only to turn around and go back to Sybil?
There is a brief moment where Stefan almost gets the situation under control by putting down Damon, but then Sybil gets out of her holding cell and gets Damon right back by her side.
I’m all for bad boy Damon, but at what point do we consider him a lost cause? I don’t want to see Stefan give up on his brother, but I also don’t want Stefan to torture himself.
There needs to be some sort of resolution. Either Damon goes full evil or he returns to normal.

Seline is finally exposed as the second Siren. It’s still unclear what she wants the twins for, but their magic is at the center of it.
It’s a little too convenient for Tyler to have held onto the information about Seline, but at least Matt is able to use that information to warn Caroline and Alaric. Unfortunately when they arrive home, Seline and the twins are nowhere to be found.
Cade is bound to make an appearance soon. I’m still convinced Sybil wants Damon so she can go head to head with Seline and Cade since she never wanted this life to begin with. However, I’m not sure what Damon can help with considering Cade is the Devil himself.
Stray Observations
- Tyler’s funeral at the carnival is very moving, but it still doesn’t help that his death feels like a needless act.
- Caroline reminding Stefan what he told her at the carnival when she first turned into a vampire is a nice callback.
- It’s kind of foolish for Alaric to leave his intern all alone at the Armory with Sybil. He should know better.
