Teen Wolf Review: Memory Lost (Season 6 Episode 1)
For months we’ve been waiting for this moment. Teen Wolf Season 6 Episode 1, “Memory Lost,” finally gives it to us.
Stiles Stilinski has been forgotten and we’re still all over the place about it! *hands out tissues*
Knowing something is going to happen and actually seeing it play out before your eyes are two completely different things. The signs were there from the start with the yearbook photo sign-up, the jersey, and Lydia’s mom. And as soon as the viewer connected them all, Stiles fate became all the sadder.
Stiles has been so afraid to let go of the life he’s made with these people. And not because he loves the danger of the supernatural and the unknown, but because he knows where he belongs and where he fits in.
He’s the scrawny human sidekick with amazing research skills, a heart of gold, and sarcasm to match.
He’s comfortable. He’s pack. Contemplating anything else is difficult and he’s been avoiding it as much as possible like any of us would do.
The Ghost Riders decided to take it all away by changing his life for him long before he realized it. When he did, it felt like watching glass slowly shatter.
That moment, him standing in the hallway and having just discovered that he was the chosen one, was one of emotional clarity and heartbreak. After working so hard and coming so far, his life and his pack, was going to be snatched away from him.
This was not the change he wanted or the one he’d been fighting against but he wasn’t going to let it bring him down. Stiles Stilinski was going to fight.
Stiles sought out pack mates, his dad, his best friend, and the girl he loves because he’s not going down easy. He’s a fighter who will make it back to them because as scared as he’s been, this is his life and he’s so damn proud of the man he’s become.
Scott forgetting him I can handle. Lydia forgetting him is hard, but I can handle it too.
But the Sheriff forgetting his own son? Oh, that one hurts. That’s the punch in the gut that told me that this was going to break me in the upcoming weeks.
For years the relationship between Stiles and his father has been a cornerstone of Teen Wolf. They’ve fallen apart, fallen together, and finally reached a point where they can be honest with each other and fight the supernatural by each other’s side. Taking it all away feels like the cruelest punishment.
It’s interesting to note that out of all of them Lydia is the only one that has an inkling that something is wrong. Her connection with Stiles, something that has grown so much throughout the seasons, has reached a pivotal point.
She doesn’t think that there’s something wrong, that there’s something missing, only because she’s a banshee. Stiles is her best friend nowadays. He’s her confidant, her banter companion, and the one person who really sees how brilliant, wonderful, and loving she really is.
In the upcoming weeks we’re going to see this bond tested before our eyes. We already know what’s between them, we’ve watched it for years. But to see that come to life in Lydia’s eyes, the realization that she loves Stiles, is going to be something wondrous and truly unforgettable.
Until then, don’t forget Stiles. Remember.
Additional Notes
- No one noticed that a student disappeared and reappeared in science class?
- Splitting up trope was told to go to hell in this episode, as it should be. This moment between Scott and Stiles was also a small sign of how much Stiles doesn’t want to leave his pack.
- Figures that the new cutie is a Nazi werewolf.
- Malia’s entrance and naked rise, felt like it was straight out of The Terminator. Badass.
- Stiles and Lydia were arguing like an old married couple in this episode. Now that’s some foreshadowing that I can get behind.
Favorite Scene from Memory Lost
Stiles telling Lydia that he loves her was the most honest he’s been about his feelings for her in years. He knew his time was running out and he didn’t want to waste a second not telling her how he felt.
