Supergirl Review: Survivors (Season 2 Episode 4)
Supergirl Season 2 Episode 4 does an excellent job with some stories while leaving us scratching our head over others.
“Survivors” introduces Roulette played by Dichen Lachman, and confirms some hopeful theories we made following last week’s episode.
What this episode lacks in story progression it mostly makes up for in character development. We get to see Mon El bonding with Winn, and Kara growing as a reporter, while Alex and J’onn both reveal personal information.
Last week with the introduction of Supergirl‘s first canon queer character, Maggie Sawyer, many people started to speculate if she and Alex might be headed towards a romantic relationship. This week it appears that the theories of many fans are correct.
This episode, much like last week’s, pairs Maggie and Alex up every time Maggie is around. Alex’s reactions to anything Maggie does seem to indicate that she is both excited and unsettled by her. She looks forward to each meeting with enthusiasm and looks incredibly defeated when Maggie turns down her invitation for drinks to go on a date with someone else.
Supergirl is definitely laying the groundwork to confirm Alex as a queer character, and setting up an excellent slow burn relationship between she and Maggie.
While we’re on the subject of LGBT+ characters, it’s possible that Mon El may fall somewhere on that spectrum as well.
In a flashback at the beginning of the episode we see that he had a close relationship with the prince of his home world.
I could be reading too much into that singular interaction, but we can always use more LGBT+ characters on television and I would certainly like to see Supergirl go there with both Alex and Mon El.
Mon El bonds really well with Winn and their night out on the town is adorable if ill-advised.
Kara has him released from the DEO into her custody as a way to make amends with him as well as to make up for not being able to do what she was initially sent to Earth to do: protect her younger cousin.
This could be an interesting relationship, but only if the show doesn’t take it in a romantic direction.
If Supergirl is going to end Kara’s relationship with James for no real reason, it certainly shouldn’t give her a new one so soon, especially a relationship with far less foundation and chemistry.
Other Thoughts:
- I love seeing Kara grow as a reporter! It’s good to see her struggle and overcome obstacles here, she isn’t perfect and it takes her time to learn a new skill just like anyone else.
- Lena granted Kara access to her at anytime, but she also seemed to be planning to cash in her good will later in return for Kara’s help. What exactly is she planning?
- Roulette gets released at the last minute, so she must be involved with someone powerful. I would love for her story to tie into the Cadmus plot somehow. Who do you think ordered her release?
- J’onn got off to a rough start with M’Gann, but managed to end things on good terms with her, with the promise that he’d be around if she ever wanted to contact him. However, in the final moments of the episode she reveals to the audience that she’s actually been a white martian all along?! I don’t understand where this subterfuge is going at all to be completely honest. But it’s nice to see J’onn connecting with someone outside the DEO and the Danvers sisters.
- Next week we finally get more James content again! Are you as excited as I am?
