American Horror Story Season Finale Review: Chapter 10 (Season 6 Episode 10)

American Horror Story, Reviews

The season finale of American Horror Story: Roanoke ends with a bang. Literally.

One of the most enjoyable parts of this episode is when Lee finally blows the haunted Big Shaker Mansion to smithereens, but I’m not so sure I like how it goes down.

Lee technically gets to walk away at the end, but she’s dead and is now forced to live a life with Priscilla; all because of Flora.

I will admit that Flora being the ultimate survivor of American Horror Story: Roanoke is quite the twist, but I don’t like it. This entire season, everything that happens, is all because of Flora wanting to play around in the woods with a dead girl.

Lee and Mason would not have gone in the woods, and Lee would not have killed him. Nobody would have died if Flora had stayed at home like a normal child.

Granted, I know American Horror Story is not a regular show, but I feel robbed.

The return of Lana Winters – even if we only get to see her for a few minutes – is arguably one of the best things about this episode.

Lana Winters is one of the best characters throughout the entire series, so having her come back is a big highlight. For a hot second, I think that Ryan Murphy is going to give us Lana and then take her away just as fast when Lott Polk shows up with an assault rifle to get his revenge on Lee.

Speaking of the Polks, Lott showing up has no significance other than to shake up Lee and Lana on live television. Other than that, he’s pointless.

Even then, he’s useless. I feel like him showing up was just to get rid of the last Polk. Since all of the seasons are going to be connected, I think that if Lott Polk had stayed alive and showed up in a later season that would be an interesting twist. Considering everyone, I believe, thought that all of the Polks were dead. I know I sure did.

Let’s also remember that Lana Winters is supposed to be in her seventies, but looks no older than a day over thirty. I can only hope to age with such grace – give me whatever she’s been drinking.

Lastly, the ending scene of this finale legitimately makes me sad. Lee willingly gives up her life for Flora, and Flora doesn’t even care. Lee wants Flora to change her view of her so much that she offers to die in Flora’s place to protect a dead girl from the Butcher.

Does anyone remember that meme with the little girl grinning at the camera as the house burns down behind her? The ending shot of Flora makes me think of that every single time I watch it.

Overall, I enjoyed this season, besides this finale. The finale doesn’t do the whole season justice. I’m going to have to keep Coven as my number one and throw Roanoke in third, behind Asylum.

Although this season wasn’t the best, I do think that it is one of the creepiest seasons, behind Asylum.

Ryan Murphy leaves out a lot of the sex that he has added in the previous seasons and replaces that with terror, which I am thankful for. I mean, terror and fear are the reason we watch American Horror Story after all.

Other Thoughts:

  1. Matt Bomer played us all. He admitted back in June that he was going to be a part of this season, but alas we only hear him as the narrator of “Crack’d.”
  2. The beginning of the episode perfectly describes how any event goes when it comes to fans interacting with celebrities. I can’t help but laugh when the fan in the audience asks for a hug and when another fan asks what Rory’s favorite color is because that is exactly what happens all of the time. I can’t help but feel like that some shade was thrown towards fans. I see you, Ryan Murphy.
  3. I wish we had got to see more of the real Edward Mott because I feel like he is the most terrifying ghost this season. The Chen’s being second. The way they crawl on all fours and crawl on the walls utterly terrifies me.
  4. My biggest hope for season seven of American Horror Story is that they get Adina Porter back. Making her the lead of the season was the smartest move ever. I’ve been a fan of Adina for quite a bit, and now other people get to witness her brilliant acting. She is worthy of being a regular on the show.
