The Boroughs Premiere Date Announced by Netflix
The Boroughs is a new science-fiction series on Netflix, which explores a retirement community in a New Mexico desert. The town has a dark secret, so the heroes must come out of retirement for some monster hunting.
It will feature, per Tudum, “unlikely heroes [banding] together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have: time.” The series stars Alfred Molina as Sam Cooper, a newcomer to the community.
All eight episodes of The Boroughs Season 1 will premiere on Netflix on Thursday, May 21, according to Empire.
The Boroughs was created by showrunners and executive producers Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, who previously created The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance for Netflix.
Matt and Ross Duffer, creators of Stranger Things, serve as producers on the series.
“While the heroes in The Boroughs have a few more years on them than the kids from Stranger Things, they are a similarly lovable bunch of misfits, and we can’t wait for you to join them on an adventure that is at turns scary, funny, and deeply touching,” the Duffer Brothers said in a statement to Tudum.
The Duffers further compared The Boroughs to the 1985 horror film Cocoon, directed by Ron Howard. That film centered on a retirement community discovering an alien fountain of youth.
“Everyone talks about wanting to make a show that teenagers can watch with their parents,” said Addiss and Matthews in a statement to Tudum.
“We wanted to make one that teenagers could watch with their parents and their grandparents, that everyone could enjoy.”
“[Addiss and Matthews] were adamant that — unlike so many stories about older characters — this wouldn’t treat aging as a punchline. Instead, it would treat its characters as real people facing real challenges … along with a few supernatural ones,” added the Duffer Brothers.
Joining Molina is a large ensemble cast, including Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Bill Pullman, Clarke Peters, Denis O’Hare, Jena Malone, Rafael Casal, Ed Begley Jr., and more. Ben Taylor (Sex Education) is an executive producer and will direct the first two episodes.
