Supergirl Review: The Adventures of Supergirl (Season 2 Episode 1)

Reviews, Supergirl

Supergirl Season 2 is back and as delightful as ever. After the months of hiatus, the return of Supergirl feels like greeting a friend you haven’t seen in awhile who still makes you feel happy and loved.

Kara: After so many years of being lost, I am finally home.

With the addition of many new characters, including Superman himself, many fans have grown increasingly worried that the show would become less about Kara and more about her infamous cousin. And I am more than happy to report that that isn’t the case at all!

Superman’s entrance is handled perfectly. He swoops in with a charming effortlessness and humility, while serving to support and uplift Kara throughout the episode. Not once does he appear to overshadow her or undermine that this is Supergirl’s show.

Though this is the first time we see the two of them interact, the ease and familiarity between them comes quickly and seamlessly. The show also handles their distorted ages really well: Kara was much older than Clarke back on Krypton, but he’s been living on Earth far longer than she has. They both learn from each other and balance each other out in a really refreshing way.

Clark: I really like it when you tell me stories about home, you make it real.

With the addition of Clark Kent, the show also gains Lena Luthor, Lex Luthor’s adopted sister. Bless the Supergirl writers for continuing to keep this show full of interesting and dynamic women. I’m not quite sure if Kara should trust Lena yet, but I have a considerable amount of respect for her.

Lena: I’m just a woman trying to make a name for herself outside her family. You understand that?

We’re set up to believe that Lena will become a new enemy for Kara, but she’s actually the target of her maniacal brother’s machinations. I look forward to seeing more of her this season!

At its core, Supergirl is still primarily about Kara’s relationships with those around her. At center stage on this episode is her relationship with Cat Grant. This relationship is a particular favorite of mine and though I fear Cat’s departure from the show, this episode highlighted their unique dynamic beautifully.

Cat gave Kara free reign to choose her career path with her promotion at the end of last season.  Now she struggles to make a decision with so many options available to her. Cat encourages her to make a choice and go into it with her gut.

Cat: In order to live we must keep daring, keep diving.

In the end Kara chooses to become a reporter, like her cousin. In a lovely scene, Cat reveals that she had known that was the perfect job for Kara all along. Beneath her cool exterior, Cat cares deeply for Kara; she believes in her and pushes her to be the very best version of herself. We all need a Cat Grant in our lives.

Cat: You have integrity to right wrongs, and see justice done. You inspire me Kara, I can see the hero within you. Now get out and make me proud.

On the other end of Kara’s relationships, her budding romance with James has apparently hit a full stop. After spending the entirety of Season 1 locked in the “will they, won’t they” trope, Kara and James are back solidly in the “they won’t” category. I have mixed feelings about this decision.

Clark: All I know is that being Kara is just as important as being Supergirl.

While I certainly enjoyed the two of them getting together in the Season 1 finale,  I can also see the appeal of keeping the two of them as just friends. Kara doesn’t need a romance to be a hero, but it’s also nice to see her find love.  We’ll have to see how the writers handle this from here before I make a final decision.

OTHER THOUGHTS:

  • I’m seriously in denial that Cat is probably leaving. I know it’s happening, and I understand why, but it still doesn’t make me happy.
  • Winn works at the DEO now! I like him being used in this capacity. This is definitely a positive change.
  • Clark Kent is going to stick around for a while! As long as the show continues to handle Superman in the way it has on this episode, I have no problem with that.
  • How adorable is Cat’s crush on Clark?
  • Jon and Superman have a fundamental disagreement on keeping Krypton versus destroying it. It looks like next week that argument might come to a head. I’m excited to see how it plays out.
  • Brenda Strong is playing an evil doctor at Fort Cadmus, the same facility we learned Alex and Kara’s dad is being held captive last season. If what she does to the assassin who tries to kill Lena Luthor is any indication, I have little hope for what happened to Jeremiah Danvers.
  • How do you feel about Lena Luthor?  She’s won me over with her optimism to do good even in when faced with the threat of death. And shooting the guy her brother sent to kill her is definitely a boss move.
  • Do you agree with the show’s decision to keep Kara and James as friends rather than love interests?

Samantha (she/her) is a social media specialist by day and a sci-fi junkie by night. As a freelance writer and podcaster, she also enjoys live-tweeting, blogging, good music, and better television. Her current favorite television shows include Star Trek (yes, all of them), Riverdale, and Stranger Things and there will always be a place in her heart for Battlestar Galactica, Leverage, and The West Wing.
