Reviews, Suits

Whoa.

After enough twists and turns that still have my head spinning, Mike is finally out of prison. Suits Season 6 Episode 9, “The Hand That Feeds You,” delivers an episode that keeps its audience on their toes until the very end.

Thank goodness Mike finally does walk out of those doors at the end, because while I’ve enjoyed the fact that we actually got to see Mike in prison rather than giving him an easy out or having a time jump, it’s gone on just a little too long.

Especially since we’ve gone in circles over whether or not a deal would happen for Mike in the first place. I mean seriously, I’m exhausted.

That said, the way this works out is incredibly gratifying. Just as Harvey is about to make a sacrifice for Mike that could ruin his career, Mike walks through the doors with a plan to save him. For a moment, I thought it was something they had planned together, but this one is all Mike.

The relationship between Mike and Harvey has always been the driving force of the show.

Yes, we’re rooting for happiness between Mike and Rachel, and yes, I think we all want to see Harvey and Donna end up together. But that’s not the point. The point is Mike and Harvey’s friendship.

I’m interested to see what will happen next. Mike can’t be a lawyer in the traditional sense, but to keep that relationship going means he’ll still likely be learning from Harvey and working with him somehow. For now, we’re glad to see him back in a SUIT (how symbolic!) and outside the prison walls.

Of course, before Mike can be released, he has to prove himself as a man of high morals once again. It’s a little infuriating, and while I think this has always been an important part of his character, it almost seems now like he’s trying to prove something.

That doesn’t mean I’m any less happy, though, that Kevin is getting out of prison too. I hope we’ll get to see more of him.

Mike’s final plan in prison is one that is both crazy and brilliant. He takes a calculated (literally) risk that pays off, even though it’s a close call though could have easily ended with Mike in hospital.

It doesn’t, though, because Mike is smart enough to plan everything down to the second, and there isn’t much that’s more satisfying than seeing Gallo get put in his place.

Hopefully, it is once and for all, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he shows up again in the future somehow.

Meanwhile, Rachel remains focused on Leonard Bailey’s case, and that case brings out another side of Jessica as well. She’s been keeping a safe distance from the emotions of the case because of her past — a case that didn’t have a happy ending.

I absolutely love Rachel and Jessica working on this together, and they’re in some ways become a female version of Harvey and Mike.

They’re friends, but Jessica also has a lot to teach Rachel, and Rachel has a lot to learn. Both Rachel and Mike tend to show some naiveté, Jessica and Harvey have had tough experiences that have shaped who they are — both as lawyers and as people.

Jessica also recognizes Rachel’s strengths, but she also knows when she needs to be the one to make something happen.

Jessica: Nobody is better at research than you, but nobody is better at dropping the hammer than me.

Overall, “The Hand That Feeds You” is a really satisfying episode, especially when Mike finally comes walking out of those prison doors.

Other Thoughts:

  • Donna and Louis going mudding together! Donna is such a good friend.
  • I’m over the whole thing with Louis and Tara, though. I’d love to see Louis in a happy relationship, but this seems like it’s heading in a strange direction.
  • Leonard getting to see his daughter is one of my favorite moments from this episode. I’m so glad Jessica made that happen for him.

  • I got the impression before Season 6 started that these episodes would be more light-hearted and funnier, but they haven’t really pulled that off with the drama stakes being so high still….so I am looking forward to some lighter episodes in the future now junior has done his time!
