Lucifer Review: Everything’s Coming Up Lucifer (Season 2 Episode 1)
Some shows are better off sticking to the basics instead of trying to shake things up. After watching the Season Premiere, I’m convinced Lucifer is one of those shows.
More of the same is definitely the approach in Lucifer‘s second season. Despite many promises, the show hasn’t really changed much.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as evidenced by “Everything’s Coming Up Lucifer.” The show still follows a cop procedural while giving Tom Ellis plenty of screen time to do his magic.
The first episode does feel a lot like setup. Mommy Dearest is nowhere to be found and Lucifer is scared out of his wits. Chloe is now unsure of who exactly Lucifer is.
What amazes me is that the premiere only takes place 2 days after the season 1 finale and so much has happened during that time.
Dan got himself suspended, reinstated and demoted. Lucifer and Amenadiel have searched all over L.A for Mom.
It does rather lead to a lot of characters spouting random exposition nonsense in an otherwise good episode of Lucifer.
The main plot serves as a decoy for Lucifer‘s family issues to manifest themselves. It turns out that Lucifer is actually the victim of a quarreling family this time around.
In classic Lucifer style, he blames everyone but himself for Mom’s escape. And of course, he blames Mom for abandoning him after he was cast out of heaven.
Up until now, Lucifer had never really realized his own conceit. It takes him a really long time to realize that Mom’s escape was his own fault, after all.

It’s nice to see Lucifer undergoing this journey that started after his near death experience. Even his therapist seems to think he’s changing.
I wish we could say the same for Chloe. She literally saw Lucifer die and come back to life. Yet she takes Amenadiel for his word that Lucifer is just an attention-seeking man-child.
Of course, the show implies that she’s open to more possibilities now but it doesn’t really look like much has changed in that department.
Meanwhile, Amenadiel is nursing a heartache for Maze, while Maze is acting all mysterious. With the spotlight on Lucifer and Mom, it was only natural that these characters would get sidestepped.
Of course, we all knew the episode was leading up to the big reveal. Enter Mom! Except that she’s not really looking too good and passes out in Lucifer‘s arms.
There’s an awkward look on Lucifer‘s face as he holds her. It looks like he hasn’t completely forgiven her yet, but there is that connection between them for now.
