Zoo Season 2 Episode 7 Review: Jamie's Got a Gun | Tell-Tale TV

Zoo Review: Jamie’s Got a Gun (Season 2 Episode 7)

Reviews, Zoo

I think it’s time to call it.

Zoo has officially lost all of its fun, action packed, animal madness.

Maybe it’s the jet. Did getting the jet ruin the fun?

“Jamie’s Got a Gun” may fall as the weakest episode of the season, thus far, and lands pretty low on my list for the entire series.

And yeah, Jamie’s got a gun…but she does nothing with it, and everyone else has one too, so why is this the episode title?

While it’s fun to make jokes about Mitch’s wonky science, the CGI animals, and the unreal circumstances of episodes past, this episode leaves me feeling like Zoo has totally lost its summer sparkle.

As happens pretty typically, Mitch came up with a science-y explanation for Jackson’s triple helix, something that amounts to an old man in the 1890s who apparently started this whole wicked animal trend (hence, re-living what’s already happened once before as mentioned in Zoo Season 2 Episode 6).

Mitch sends Jackson on a controlled drug/hypnosis trip that helps unlock childhood memories, which lead Jackson to the revelation that his father, Robert, injected Jackson with the genes many years ago.

I take issue with this entire convoluted story.

Robert Oz isn’t a bad guy. I hate seeing him painted to be the villain in a story that, just last season, vindicated his odd revelations.

I had such high hopes for the return of Robert to the Zoo story. I wanted a great reunion between he and Jackson. I imagined that we would see the Oz father and son create a cure together.

Maybe that will still be the case, but with Jackson’s new mutation and knowing that Robert is the reason for its existence, I can’t see myself being emotionally connected to that moment, should it arise. The love is gone. The respect is gone.

The writers can try to feed me a “he did it because of how much he loves him,” schtick all that they want, but it doesn’t add up, like most things in season 2 have not.

Another black cloud looming over the Zoo Crew these days is Jamie, who really needs to suck it up and get over herself, and fast.

Jamie is playing the victim, crapping on everything, and being pretty terrible to Mitch. I understand that Jamie lost a toe in the woods. I realize that she’s been through a lot. But at some point, isn’t it time for her to just stop being awful, and let her friends help her again?

Where has the hope gone? How exactly did she go from “Mitch will save me!” to “Mitch is just meh”? It happened so quickly over the course of the last few episodes, and I can’t exactly pinpoint where the change took place.

Jamie is putting her faith and friendship in the wrong man.

Like we didn’t all know that Logan would turn out to be a bad guy…it was practically telegraphed for us.

Just as she did with Agent Schaffer in season 1, her naivety got the best of her, and she can’t see that Logan is shady. Jamie should have seen this coming. Maybe she needs a new ugly genie tattoo to spark her investigative skills.

I hope that Logan hasn’t driven Dariela away for good, because she’s really the only spark left in the series. Let’s face it, even Mitch’s jokes aren’t funny this time around.

The entire sub-plot surrounding the church seems to only serve the purpose of letting Jamie and Abe know that Robert is alive, something that Abe is insistent on keeping a secret. Has Abe learned nothing about secrets within the Zoo Crew? They are no fun, and they will hurt someone. Isn’t that how the rhyme goes?

Obviously General Davies will be headed for the plane soon, but sadly, I’m so bored with the story that I hope he DOES get Jackson. Maybe that will inject some much-needed action into this slow-moving season.

Zoo fans, we’re at the halfway point in the season! You know my thoughts, but what are yours? Are you enjoying this go-around with the crew? Do you miss Chloe? Is Jamie really a drag nowadays? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

  • I very much agree with this review. I found this episode to be dull and mostly eye-roll inducing. I’m a huge Billy Burke fan and only really ever bothered to watch Zoo because of him, but even he isn’t enough at this point to keep me interested.

I don’t think the writers know what they want this show to be. This episode makes me think they’re just floundering around, trying to figure it out as they go, except not a lot of actual figuring out is happening. My expectations for this show were never high to begin with, but I must say, this season, so far, has been a definite disappointment. I’ll probably still watch for Billy, but at this point, I’m almost embarrassed for him; he’s a genuinely talented guy, and I wish he were working on a project that actually was interesting and well-crafted.
