Wayward Pines Review: City Upon A Hill (Season 2 Episode 6)
It’s really weird how we came to this point.
Wayward Pines is supposed to revolve around the mysteries of the town and what lies beyond the fence. It’s supposed to be about its characters rather than the scary monsters in it. But the show seems to be losing sight of itself.
“City Upon A Hill” is a prime example of what the show is doing wrong. The focus is being diverted to what is outside the fence, when clearly there is much to be explored within Wayward Pines itself.
We’re more than halfway through this season and the characters in the show are mere strangers to us. What exactly is it that motivates Theo? Why is Rebecca so insistent on continuing her relationship with Yedlin?
In fact, the character that seems to be the most fleshed out is Jason Higgins himself. And he’s not exactly what you call the most appealing character. He continues to whine about Pilcher not preparing him for this.
And speaking of Pilcher, he’s continuing to have an influence on the show even if he is dead. He appears quite regularly but his appearances are starting to get more and more pointless. This time he appears in a flashback to shoot some abbies.
The fact remains that Season 1 characters are dying out and there are only a handful left. We have Adam, the receptionist, maybe Ben and Jason but that’s about it. An occasional Pilcher appearance wouldn’t hurt but this is getting out of hand.
Meanwhile, the female abbie continues to be experimented on. We find out that she has about twice more brainpower than ordinary humans. Despite that, they’re gonna continue the tests. I think we all know this is going to end badly.
The highlight of the episode would be the abbie attack they’ve been heavily teasing. The attack claims the life of Theresa and about half of Jason’s army.
Most of these are members of the first generation which means that the military of the town might not be enough for another abbie attack. And another attack does seem more and more likely considering that the abbies now have a leader inside Wayward Pines.
Resources are running out though and the town only has about six more weeks if nothing changes. Supplies and manpower is running low and there seems to be no way out.
Jason is continuing to have doubts about his leadership. Kerry, of course is more than happy to step in and convince him otherwise. She’s even accepted the offer to become his baby mama. They’re really all about procreation down there.
In fact, Jason and Kerry’s relationship isn’t the only one dragging the show down. We now have a winner in the love triangle between Theo, Rebecca, and Xander.
Unlike the one between Ethan, Kate and Theresa, this one is just built on pure awkwardness between Ethan and Xander. In fact, Xander’s not taking it too seriously.
Hey, I left our wife in your office.
Not something you say to a guy that punched you in the face. Xander needs to be really careful with what he’s doing. We also learn more about his shady past and how he’s involved in illegal activities. Not exactly careful if you ask me.
But perhaps the biggest bombshell would be Adam confessing that he had Ethan sent to Wayward Pines so he could pursue a romantic relationship with Theresa. But obviously, he didn’t expect her to follow him.
I don’t really know what Adam’s role on the show is anymore. He’s just confessed to the biggest douche bag move he ever made and his love interest is now dead. What he actually is, is an exposition device that could spout random exposition about the abbies in the future.
All in all, the episode got dragged down by the love triangle between Rebecca, Theo, and Xander. Theresa’s death feels incomplete for some reason while the much teased abbie attack was…just an attack.
