Wayward Pines Review: Bedtime Story (Season 2 Episode 10)
If you expect the Wayward Pines season finale to go out with a bang, I’m afraid you’ll be sorely disappointed.
Unlike last year’s gripping finale, “Bedtime Story” falls flat in every way imaginable.
The problem is that all the setup during Season 2 of Wayward Pines ultimately comes to nothing in the end.
Take CJ’s story for instance.
He was supposed to play a major part in the storyline. I fully expected him to be the surprise antagonist of the finale. Instead, his story ends with him being a complete non-factor.
The funny thing is, I was right all along.
CJ is half-mad from all of those years he spent waking up from sleep. I mean, he almost kills everyone inside their pods.
Almost.
Setting up CJ’s story over multiple episodes comes to nothing, aside from building up to one moment that lasts all but ten seconds of screen-time.
Something even more unforgivable comes in the form of Theo’s character development.
In “Bedtime Story,” Theo goes from a murdering psychopath, to a caring husband and humanitarian citizen, to a self-righteous suicide bomber of sorts, and back again to the Once and Future Leader of Wayward Pines.
At this point, we have to ask the writers exactly what they want to do with his character.
Theo basically deals the killing blow to Jason, he almost commits genocide against the abbies, and then he lets Kerry commit genocide instead.
Kerry’s character development is the only thing that makes sense, in fact. She finds out that Jason was her son all along, and then she realizes what Theo is about to do and does it herself instead.
“There is no greater good. There’s only good.”
Now, I would have loved to see Kerry be the leader of Wayward Pines, but in the end, she falls pray to Yedlin’s mantra and decides to inject the virus into herself.
This is an abrupt end to a character that could have actually been a better protagonist than Theo.
At this point, we have to admit that Ben really is dead and Arlene is the last surviving Season 1 character.
Let’s talk about a loose end: Mario.
The show makes absolutely no effort to explain his sudden and miraculous recovery. How can they just let that slide? Mario should be back next season, if there is one. Let’s hope they do explain it.
All in all, the finale is a huge letdown. We keep cutting to shots of abbies preparing for an attack which never happens.
In fact, nothing really happens in this episode except the citizens going back to sleep.
Oh, and Kerry preparing to infect abbies with a virus that could potentially wipe out two-thirds of their population. Thanks, Dr. Yedlin!
You know who would be an absolutely great protagonist? Oscar.
He is literally the only likable guy in the entire episode, if not the entire season. Calling out Theo for killing Jason is something a lot of people don’t dare to do.
