Tell-Tale TV Panel: Jane the Virgin Season 2

Jane the Virgin, Tell-Tale TV Season Review Panels

It was another crazy fun season of Jane the VirginThere was a wedding, a shooting, and a surprising number of identity fake outs. You have to admit,  Jane the Virgin is never boring.

What did you think of this season overall? Join the discussion by leaving your thoughts in a comment below.

Our panelists are:

On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rank the season overall?

Christine: I’d give it a 7. It lost steam a little in the middle of the season, but it recovered nicely.

Caralynn: 7. I agree with Christine that it lagged a bit in the middle (and overall I don’t think it was quite as good as season 1) but the show just makes me so happy! And Gina Rodriguez is amazing, always.

Jessica: I’m going to give it a 6. It lost steam and some of it’s sparkle midseason, but recovered nicely by the end.

What was the season’s biggest mistake?

Christine: Personally, by mid-season, I was so tired of the Michael and Rafael triangle that I was ready to give up on the show. I saw a lot of potential for Professor Chavez, and I ended up being quite disappointed with the angle that they ended up taking with that story as well.

Caralynn: I thought the Rogelio stalker storyline was kind of stupid. In general, I didn’t really like Rogelio being isolated from Jane and the rest of the Villanueva family following his breakup with Xo.

Jessica: The entire love triangle. Ugh! I wish they would have dropped it and not rehashed it so many times over the season. Poor Jane and poor audience for having to watch it go round and round again.

What worked really well this season?

Christine: Being a relatively new mom myself, I was so impressed by how well the show handled Jane becoming a mom and all of the emotions that come with being a first time parent. Nearly every story was told with humorous accuracy.

Caralynn: I really liked that the triangle actually resolved itself. Jennie Snyder Urman has talked a lot about how she never wanted Jane to be waffling on her decision — she definitely didn’t want to have an indecisive heroine, and I thought that was really a smart choice.

Once Jane chose Michael, she really meant it — there was no back-and-forth or doubt or anything, and I think that the show maintained the drama and tension without having Jane be constantly doubting if she’d chosen the right guy.

Jessica: I loved that Jane struggled with school and family. That everything isn’t always roses and lollipops, that sacrifices have to be made in the end to obtain your goals. Her family being her support system was just the cherry on top. She didn’t have to do it alone where as others have no one else to rely on.

What was the biggest surprise of the season?

Christine: Susanna being Rose blew my mind. I still can’t believe it. It’s the twist I never, in a million years, saw coming!

Caralynn: Rafael not saying anything to Jane about his feelings for her before she walked down the aisle legitimately surprised me. It was impressive character development on his part. Also, obviously, that very legit face mask that Rose-as-Susanna had. So very telenovela.

Jessica: Susanna being Rose!!! I needed Rose not to be dead and that twist was amazing!
