Powers Review: Hell Night (Season 2 Episode 3)
Who the heck is that man?!
That’s my reaction upon seeing that gentleman in a hat gracefully dancing along the road after seemingly bringing down the house on Walker and Marigold in the third episode of Powers entitled, “Hell Night.”
While the bigger story at hand is really the inevitable fighting that will happen between powers that evening, that ending completely stole the show.
Leading up to the massive downfall of rubble that’s currently burying our favorite protagonist, Walker, Marigold informed him that ‘he’ was coming for her, and that ‘he’ isn’t very happy with the way things have turned out.
Marigold and Krispin were obviously meant to die in that car wreck back in episode 1. With Krispin resting in peace, Marigold, AKA ‘Chaotic Chick,’ is obviously scared that she is the next target…which she is.
But again, I can’t stop thinking of that man. Is THIS the guy? Could it be that HE is the man behind Retro Girl’s death? He has some powers, but would they have really been strong enough to take down the most beloved hero Los Angeles had ever seen?
Walker certainly thought he had the case solved. THX ends up being a bit of a dead end (literally), though it does lead him to the garage and to discovering that someone is bankrolling the whole operation. Beyond that, Walker is really right back to square one, that is, unless Marigold manages to make it out of the rubble alive.
Marigold knows things, and she’s scared enough to talk.
Aside from this being the night from hell for Walker, Los Angeles is bracing itself for a night of rioting between the power gangs, because with Retro Girl gone, there is no one to keep the peace.
I’ll admit, the ‘big fight’ was a bit of a letdown. Considering that many gang members with powers surrounding Calista, Zora, Pilgrim, and Kutter, I was expecting there to be a few more punches thrown. However, the touch down from Super Shock makes it all worthwhile.
It’s a sign of great writing that I’m so invested in Super Shock having only met him briefly and knowing very little about him through the dialogue of other characters. But when he hits the ground, I get it – I understand that he’s a BIG deal, and that his reappearance after 40 years MEANS something.
Along with, what appears to be, his passing of the Retro Girl torch to Calista.
Is she ready for the weight of being Retro Girl? That’s certainly a good question.
Where I wanted a little more discouragement to come from Walker in episode 2, I’m glad that it comes from Zora. With everything she’s just gone through, she’s the best person to speak real reason to Calista, whether she wants to hear it or not.
The very idea that Calista, as a new Power, can just step right into Retro Girl’s old costume and expect to pick up where she left off is crazy. It’s dangerous.
Above all else, it’s something I don’t know that Calista is ready for as it invades her personal life.
She’s already going out incognito as many seek to find out everything they can about this ‘new’ Retro Girl. The frenzy that will surround her once she’s out is the largest aspect of this new role that she hasn’t considered. Zora’s just been burned by the fame side of being a Power. No one understands that struggle better than she does.
When she says it isn’t jealousy driving her to have a heart to heart with Calista, I believe Zora.
Zora wants to help Calista by not having her repeat the mistakes that she made. It’s admirable…it’s heroic in its own powerful way.
Kutter also delivers one of my favorite moments of the episode, after discovering that Cross is letting Walker and Pilgrim re-open Retro Girl’s murder case on their own.
Pilgrim hasn’t been totally keen about Kutter since she began working with him, but he’s obviously got his head in the right space, a thoughtful place that Walker is too emotionally invested in to think clearly.
Kutter knew that Walker would abandon Pilgrim and leave her alone and powerless. And he knew she’d need help. He really SHOULD be betting on horses.
Do I smell a little romance between these two? If you watched after the credits stopped rolling, there was quite a nice surprise hookup between them, but will it turn into a full-blown love story?
What would their ‘ship name be? Kilgrim? Pilter? We’ll work on one together.
Kutter shows up just in time to help Pilgrim, and help her beat the odds stacked in favor of her death before the end of the night.
Maybe there’s more to Kutter than I initially thought.
So what now? What’s the next big reveal in the death of Retro Girl? Who will be the next suspect, or have we met her murderer? Will Marigold survive the rubble?
