Marcel confronting Klaus in The Originals Give 'Em Hell Kid. The Originals Review: Give ‘Em Hell Kid (Season 3 Episode 21)

The Originals Review: Give ‘Em Hell Kid (Season 3 Episode 21)

Reviews, The Originals

The wakes of Camille O’Connell & Davina Claire in The Originals “Give ‘Em Hell Kid” are marred by the family battle wagging behind the scenes.

The Mikaelsons end up creating their own destruction by mistreating someone they claim as their own, Marcel Gerard.

Let’s talk about it!

The Mikaelson’s honor Cami’s death with a get together in a place she considered home and where The Originals spend half their time. In contrast, Davina’s funeral is a quiet affair in the center of witch grounds with a mix of people who love her, ready to send her off.

Everyone in “Give ‘Em Hell Kid” is a stuck in a state of sadness, anger, and defeat. They’re trying to justify their actions to each other by any means necessary, even if they have to hurt the other like Elijah did.

Freya tries to explain herself to Kol with no success because he doesn’t know her. Klaus tries to reason with Marcel with memories of the past in a failed attempt to lose someone he has treated so poorly.

Elijah doesn’t try, he kills Marcel and ends the talking. At the end of the day Marcel was not family to Elijah Mikaelson. He was a stray that they picked up all those years ago, something that they could amuse themselves with in hopes of being normal.

What makes Marcel’s death even more tragic is that he was giving the Mikaelsons a chance to repent for their mistakes. (An opening they didn’t deserve because Marcel doesn’t owe them anything.) All they had to do was ask for forgiveness and pledge to everything in their power to bring Davina back.

Instead of doing just that, the Mikaelsons end up wasting the opportunity by continuously blundering their words and reaffirming Marcel’s belief that he isn’t family.

Honestly, it makes it really hard to cheer for the main characters of a show when they pull stunts like this.

We’re going to wrap this up with the brilliant and brave Davina Claire.

She returns as this pseudo poltergeist who reaches out to Kol because he’s the love of her life and full of all sorts of witch knowledge. Her goodbye to Kol, when they destroy the Ancestors, is another reminder that no matter how much Davina tries, death will always separate her from the ones that she loves.

Here’s hoping that she finds peace in the afterlife, away from the Ancestors that couldn’t let go of a grudge. With any luck Davina will find her way to Cami and they can open up their own bar in the afterlife.

Hey, stranger things have happened on The Originals.

 Other Observations:

  • Klaus was distraught over Marcel’s death, can’t deny that one. But his words in this episode are not enough to erase the fact that Marcel risks death by trying to be equals with Klaus and the rest of the Mikaelson’s. He’s not good enough.
  • With the way that the penultimate episode left things off, Rebekah will end up killing Marcel, the only man she truly loves in a romantic nature. Maybe she’ll die with him and break our hearts at the same time.
  • Dear Elijah, in Justin Timberlake’s words, “What goes around, goes around, goes around, comes all the way back around.”

The Originals Season Finale airs Friday, May 20th at 9/8c on The CW.

Lyra is a TV and movie enthusiast. It all started on a dark night when she turned on Fox and fell in love with the X-Files. It was all history after that as she got lost in Doctor Who, The Marvel Verse and most recently everything DC. Her love for Doctor Who lead her to study abroad, where she fell into live-tweeting and the lovely explosion of fandom life that Tumblr is. Her main love for the summer (with a mega re-watch happening) is Arrow. When she isn’t sharing her love for TV and movies she’s writing fan-fiction, taking care of her family, and puttering around her kitchen.
