Suits Season Finale Review: 25th Hour (Season 5 Episode 16)

Reviews, Suits

For every second — 44 minutes worth, of this week’s Suits episode, entitled “25th hour,” I held out hope that there was some misunderstanding. Of course Harvey is going to save Mike, or Donna is going to find some dirt on Anita. I have become so accustomed to these guys winning and always coming out on top at the 25th hour — that I just assumed it would happen again!

Of course everything is going to be okay. And of course, it isn’t!

Let’s start off with the least gut-wrenching plot.

The firm.

With Mike going to jail, the firm’s credibility is now out the window. And it’s so sad to see that literally every single person leaves the firm. All of them. I’m not sure how realistic this is, but whatever, I guess. It may be a bit exaggerated, but the point is, the firm is not really a firm anymore. Mike’s move hasn’t just affected him and Rachel. It’s affected Jessica and her firm.

Aaron Korsh doesn’t like to do time jumps — as we saw with when Mike became an investment banker. We wanted him to just go back to Harvey, but Korsh played it out. Just like how he played out Donna sticking by Louis. So it’s going to be a treat to see how Jessica gets her firm back. How Pearson Spector Litt make a name for themselves again — if at all. Maybe they will be put Jack’s name on the door. But I do have faith in Jessica. We’ve seen her fierce — we’ve seen her loyal and absolutely cutthroat. She’s lost relationships due to this firm, so I have no trouble believing that she will get it back. PSL will thrive again. Soon. But she may have to throw Harvey out since he’s associated with Mike’s case.

The things these two have lost for each other takes the words friends to another level. Or family. Because that’s what they are. All of these guys, are family. This whole episode we see how much these guys care for each other; from Mike asking Harvey to be his best man, to Harvey lying to Mike so the information of the verdict doesn’t “break him.” Everything they do, they do for each other- so I’m excited to see how Harvey deals with Mike being in jail. How often will he visit, and will he still try to get him out? Because Donna was fired once, and it took Harvey maybe 3 episodes to decide he didn’t want to work without her.

How long until he decides he wants Mike out?

Speaking of Mike’s time in jail, he’s left his fiancé to attend law school and make a name for herself.

I really don’t think Mike will serve all two years in prison… my guess is 6-9 months perhaps? Meaning the first half of Season 6, and I think Rachel will have moved on from Mike by then, and maybe even be pregnant with his child.

One of or both of those storylines are in my eight ball at the moment; because Suits doesn’t throw around sex scenes like it expletives. We see them very strategically placed, and they usually mean something: to establish Harvey’s character in the pilot, to establish Mike and Rachel’s relationship in the copier room, and now, this week’s episode. So, I can only really assume there will be significance attached to it — and I can’t wait to see how that plays out.

No matter what though, this week Meghan Markle deserves some applause. Go back and check — I have never been a fan of Rachel, but this week’s portrayal of hurt and anger, and fear and love on Markle’s part was absolutely beautiful.

Rachel Zane: You are my future.

Seeing her gush over her dress, and stand up for Mike is absolutely everything. No matter how beautiful their relationship is right now, I think conflict is always more interesting in TV– which is why, I think — for a while, Mike and Rachel will need to split.

Either way, “25th Hour” is the absolute perfect way to end what could be debated as Suitsbest season to date. It gives us tears, heartbreak, and absolute shock as we see Mike head towards the prison gates. It also sets up a season that has the ability to literally start from scratch. Season 6 for Suits can go in so many different directions, and it’s going to be so much fun to see what the writers chose to do, as well as a bit nerve wracking.

  • The finale was so, so good.

I think Season 6 is going to be very exciting. I would love to see some previous characters come back. Like, Jimmy, for example. He could be in serious trouble now because it will be obvious he lied under oath. I’m thinking he’s going to need a new job and/or a good lawyer. And Harold. Wouldn’t you love to see Harold and Louis working together again?!

I notice they didn’t show Gretchen in the abandoned halls of PSL. I hope one of the opening scenes of S6 is Louis going back to his office to see her sitting outside.

There are going to be so many great opportunities in front of the writers now. Can’t wait to see what happens!

(PS, Gabriel Macht was, once again, fantastic More so than usual in the last few episodes!).
