Grey’s Anatomy Review: I Am Not Waiting Anymore (Season 12 Episode 15)
Sometimes there are episodes that just need a subtitle. This episode of Grey’s Anatomy, entitled, “I Am Not Waiting Anymore,” could easily have been called: We Need to Talk About April.
The hour rewinds a little into “Odd Man Out” and we get to see exactly how accidental Arizona’s slip was, as well as some anger, and a lot of people weighing in – not about April, but about Arizona being the one to tell Jackson.
April’s pregnancy and her decision not to tell Jackson are a touchy subject. There are a lot of old wounds that haven’t healed here. Neither Jackson nor April ever really recovered from losing Samuel and April is clinging to the hope that this baby will be fine. She, of course, has every right to refuse the tests and she has every right to her beliefs, but her final confrontation with Jackson is troubling. He accuses her of wanting to wait until it’s too late to terminate the pregnancy. He is adamant that he has a say in this pregnancy but April says that he has a say once there is a baby. He is the baby’s father but it’s April’s body and while he should be heard, the decision needs to be hers.
The only way April will be objective and start to hear him is if she puts aside her anger. She says that Jackson didn’t want to be married to her, that she knew that a baby would change things, and she didn’t want him to stay with her out of duty. She has a valid point. Jackson, on the other hand, wants to be a father. That’s all he ever wanted.
With all of this fallout, Arizona spends the episode going around to different people in the hospital hoping they will back up her decision to tell Jackson. All the while, she’s still talking about April and spreading the mess around even further.
She starts with Callie, who tells her that she was wrong. Then proceeds to Bailey, who can’t take off her boss hat and tells her that she committed a HIPAA violation. Then, finally, Arizona talks to Amelia; the only person in the hospital who can relate to how low she feels, and the advice that Amelia gives her is perfect and not at all uplifting. She says:
AMELIA: Give it time. Maybe April forgives you. Maybe she won’t. But that’s not up to you.
It’s heartbreaking, but this is exactly how this story needed to close. Arizona was looking for someone to back her up when there is no denying that she did something wrong. She needed someone with a perspective to help her nurse her wounded pride.
Now, the last point: on Meredith and dating.
While we will always mourn McDreamy, we need to remember that “She’s Leaving Home” took place over most of a year. We’re not saying that she’s over Derek, because she will never be over him, but she needs to find new people to relate to.
And, she still wears Derek’s ferry boat scrub cap. He will always be with her!
If we aren’t ready to see her with anyone else can we, at least, agree that this gorgeous army doctor is a sweet man? After she cancels drinks because of a transplant surgery, he is willing to just take her home and chat about surgery in the car while eating fries.Who doesn’t want a love like that?
Stray Thoughts
- Amelia and Owen, although we love the thought of you,we cannot condone this relationship. Amelia has worked so hard for her sobriety and she deserves someone who is going to support her through it.
- The line about DeLuca nut punching his fellow intern—gold!
- Karev is awesome! This week he saves a little girl with cystic fibrosis. This is a disease that can’t be cured, but a three-organ transplant gave this girl a shot a better quality of life. Someone give Karev an award!
- Bailey in a bathroom means the scene is going to be awesome. We really can’t describe it. You just have to watch the episode and have a good giggle.
