Teen Wolf Review: The Maid of Gévaudan (Season 5 Episode 18)

Reviews, Teen Wolf

After months of speculation and Theo being a manipulating jerk, The Beast is sweet and gentle Mason. It’s the grand payoff of planning and luring us into a false sense of security that Teen Wolf loves to pull every once in awhile. With two episodes to go, “The Maid of Gévaudan” goes to show that no one escapes the touch of the supernatural, especially family.

Crystal Reed’s return feels like coming home, back to the beginning. She reminds us of how much we miss Allison Argent’s bravery, strength, and those dimples. Her story as the Maid of Gévaudan paints a picture of what’s to come for The Beast. Only pain and the blood of a loved one can kill the demon wolf and stop its rampage. Her life also shows us how the Argent line starts off as a sisters fight to stop her cruel brother. It’s a tale of determination and love that the Argents have lost in their endless pursuit of destroying the monsters of this world. (Except Allison and Chris of course. Their love changed them for the better and reminds us of what Marie fought for.) It’s not just wishful thinking that makes us want more of Marie. Female heroes like her are a welcome change in the plethora of male heroes taking center stage. With a stage set in the past it can give girls someone to look up to that they’ve never experienced before.

The McCall Pack continues to exceed expectations and manages to pull itself together even when surrounded by immediate danger. Malia calls for backup of someone she trusts to help protect them. Scott puts aside the fact that he’s exposing his true nature to Beacon Hills students, when facing The Beast, because this is his territory and in a way they are part of his pack.

And then there’s Liam. The sweet, always angry at himself, Beta throws himself into battle (again) with no regard of his own injuries because he cares for his Alpha and the people there. He’s a hero who understands what he has to do but also feels driven to stop this monster because it’s close to his heart, pulling him nearer. Only now does he understand why.

That brings us to our next point, Mason. It’s not surprising that he’s The Beast. He’s been this bright light in Teen Wolf that always ended up skirting around the supernatural. It was inevitable that it would come for him one day. Somewhere along the line, while everyone was trying to stop Theo or saving Lydia, he was changing because of the Dread Doctors. This can go two ways from here on out. He can be saved, The Beast driven out of it conquers his body. Or he can lose himself and end up fighting the hellhound in an epic showdown. After all the setup we’ve seen this past season the latter is more likely. Mason is going to die and it’s going to scar Liam for the rest of his life.

Unless it’s a trick and we’re all wrong. Now that would be a twist.

Teen Wolf airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on MTV.

Lyra is a TV and movie enthusiast. It all started on a dark night when she turned on Fox and fell in love with the X-Files. It was all history after that as she got lost in Doctor Who, The Marvel Verse and most recently everything DC. Her love for Doctor Who lead her to study abroad, where she fell into live-tweeting and the lovely explosion of fandom life that Tumblr is. Her main love for the summer (with a mega re-watch happening) is Arrow. When she isn’t sharing her love for TV and movies she’s writing fan-fiction, taking care of her family, and puttering around her kitchen.
