Pretty Little Liars Review: We’ve All Got Baggage (Season 6 Episode 17)
Pretty Little Liars has been trudging along at a snail’s pace all season. “We’ve All Got Baggage” is the seventh episode into the five-year jump, and I am still waiting for the payoff.
Let’s start with election scandal. Spencer and Veronica have a really concerned conversation about Veronica’s cancer. It’s a touching and heartwarming scene that ends with Veronica deciding to go public when Spencer talks about Veronica’s platform is founded on integrity and transparency.
I was struck by the irony of the statement. The Hastings have a history of keeping secrets. Melissa killed Bethany Young. Veronica had cancer. Oh and let’s not forget that Peter cheated on Veronica with Jessica Dilaurentis; the next-door neighbor. That family has a tight lid on everything it does. Are they going to bring up when Spencer plagiarized Melissa’s essay and it won a Golden Orchid before this election occurs? It wouldn’t surprise me.
While Veronica is giving an interview about her cancer, a story breaks about her opponent’s daughter having an abortion in high school. Bad news, the leak traces back to Spencer’s computer, which Caleb used to leak the story. A move I suspect that was mostly to drive Caleb and Hanna back together as Hanna finally sets a wedding date.
The other theme of this episode is marriage. They use Ella and Byron’s remarriage to provide a lens into different relationships into the series. Hanna styles the wedding and Aria officiates.
While the ceremony is lovely, it feels like this plot was a device to get Hanna thinking about her own engagement and marriage. She has dragged her feet when it comes to setting the date and making any plans—which, to me, says she is unsure about her relationship with Jordan. I suspect they are building to some soap opera-esque moment where Hanna is going to ditch Jordan at the alter and run off with Caleb.
Aria officiating the marriage however is a point that I can completely get behind. It’s a nice gesture and I am sure it will be a sweet moment in family photo albums. Her ceremony and speech however, feel a little cliched and saccharine. She wrote six chapters of her ex-boyfriend’s book, so it seems she could have come up with something a little more original than some existential questions.
The other marriage that comes into play was between Alison and Elliot, who show up at Aria’s door and ask her to marry them. This is a coincidence that reeks of odd timing and poor decision-making. Sure, Alison loves Eliot and she may have for a while but she’s rushing into marriage. On one hand, this feels like such an Ali move and on the other I suspect Eliot’s motives. The fact that he is willing to rush into marriage when he has been her voice of reason for the last seven episode makes me feel like something is up. Elliot isn’t helping himself get off of my “A Suspect List.”
Has anyone heard of a little thing called spousal privilege? He could confess to Ali and say “I killed your sister!” in the next episode and it wouldn’t surprise me.
There are three more episodes in the season and I am hoping that they lead to a big payoff.
Stray Thoughts
- Can we drop Melissa as a suspect, please? Unless there is hard concrete evidence I think we are beating a dead horse.
- Liam and Ezra are finally in the same room together. Talking about Aria. Awkward.
- Emily and the missing eggs? What can A be doing with those? If my eggs were missing and someone sent me pregnancy I would be freaked out too.
