American Crime Review: Season Two Episode Seven
I sound like a broken record here, but American Crime’s focus (for better or for worse) is on darker elements. Episode Seven is dark. Darker and more disturbing than anything I’ve watched recently.
This season American Crime has followed Taylor’s road as a survivor. Along the way we’ve seen other characters involved; Evy, Kevin and most importantly Eric. We’ve seen them emotionally distressed, distraught and confused. We’ve come to think we know these characters. And now it’s all coming full circle.
And not in flowers and kisses way.
Taylor, wanting to feel less than the victim that everyone see him as buys drugs and steals a gun as an escape. Eric, the confused teen who assaulted Taylor, gets attacked and stabs his assailant. And Leslie, continues to spin things to cover herself.
Anne finds out her medical records were leaked.
The last we saw of Anne, she was reeling from her interaction with Kevin’s parents. She has been so focused on getting justice for Taylor that it seems as if she forgets she has a duty to him as a mother. It looks as if Anne doesn’t need Taylor. She’s more than capable of tuning out Taylor and his constant worry about her. Except that, she really shouldn’t have tuned him out. Because when her medical history gets leaked online Taylor understandably, at least, to me sets out to punish those have made his mother’s life a living hell.
After all, Taylor makes it clear there is only one person he trusts: his mother, who has done everything she can for him even though there has been a lack of communication between the two of them. He would do anything to protect her including making a hit list and going to Leyland with the intent of killing Leslie, Kevin and Eric. But ultimately he shoots Wes, one of the boys who beat him up at the end of last week’s episode.
The genius of American Crime is not how it handles the actual crimes. But how it handles the fallout and repercussions of the crimes.
It’s about human nature and what we would do if we found ourselves in these situations. I’m not saying that Taylor should have shot Wes. But I get why he did it. He reached the point of no return and now his brutal action will have repercussions that will reverberate for the remaining three episodes.
Other Thoughts:
- I have a feeling that either Leslie or Terri released Anne’s medical records.
- So it turns out Coach Taylor’s daughter is a drug dealer. I didn’t see that coming.
- I feel as if everything going on at Thurgood Marshall is getting overshadowed and wish they would spend more time on that storyline.
- Poor Eric and Poor Taylor. These two characters have no happy ending in sight.
