NCIS: Los Angeles Review: Cancel Christmas (Season 7 Episode 11)
We might as well change the name of the show from NCIS: LA to the Densi show, because after that episode, I’ve got nothing but Densi FEELS.
I swear, there’s nothing else. I vaguely remember it being Christmas. Sam’s kid shows up. It’s nice. Joelle is also around. Not so nice. Granger is Scrooge, Eric and Nell are adorable times a hundred and Hetty is in a creepy good mood.
But none of that matters. All that matters is the Densi.
Look, I’ll be the first to say the writers haven’t always handled this relationship the best way. We’ve had our ups and downs, and our raccoons and Afghanistan. But now we’re here, looking at a committed couple of going on one year, and guess what? That’s exactly how they’re behaving!
Mature relationships being portrayed realistically on TV. Who would have thought?
To say I expected this would be …well, it would be lying. What I expected was drama, drama, drama. This show has done it before, thrown a few ridiculous obstacles our way to stall the Densi. And, well, not to judge NCIS: LA by what other shows are doing, but this seems to be the season for lying to your girlfriend. (Right Oliver? Barry?).
So, you got me, NCIS: LA . You got me good. In fact, you got me so good that for the second time in two weeks Eric Christian Olsen brought me to tears. Yes, that’s right, I’m that girl, the one who cries while watching a procedural, and I don’t care who knows it.
That scene between Kensi and Deeks in the car, NCIS: LA , that’s what I was hoping Arrow, The Flash and many other shows would give me. Honesty. Love. FEELS. OTP. And, let’s face it, you were never the likeliest candidate to deliver, NCIS: LA . But you did it.
In retrospect, this only makes sense. Of course Kensi figures it out. Of course Deeks tells her. Yes, they’ve only been in a relationship for a year, but they’ve been partners for six, on a job where if you don’t trust your partner, you might get killed. Deeks keeping this secret from Kensi any longer, especially after Hetty practically gave him the go-ahead, would have been out of character.
(We’re not going to go into all the times you’ve had him act out of character before, NCIS: LA . And you know why we’re not? Because at this point, I’m willing to let bygones be bygones.)
So, Merry Christmas, NCIS: LA . Thank you for a brilliant episode. Everything is Densi and nothing hurts.
Other things to note:
- I don’t know where the Joelle/Callen thing is going, but at this point, I’m just feeling meh about it. He clearly doesn’t want to break up with her, and she doesn’t seem to want to break up with him, so …eh …why? Is his job really worth giving up a guy you might love, Joelle? And what about you, Callen? Where’s your fight?
- Sam’s like a huge teddy bear sometimes. I swear, if I run into LL Cool J one day, I’m just going to go for a hug.
- I love how the team is now at the point where Kensi and Deeks spending Christmas at Sam’s house is normal. It was a long time coming.
- Joelle doesn’t deserve those vintage earrings, Hetty!
- Granger doesn’t interest me at all. I used the time he was on-screen to paint my nails. They’re all pretty and Christmasy.
- Nell and Eric totally did it for me this episode. I’m back in with Neric!
