Tell-Tale TV Picks of the Week: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Fresh off the Boat Bring the Laughs
This week on TV, Cat Grant finally got her exclusive interview with Supergirl while Barry faced off with Zoom on The Flash. We met the first Dark One on Once Upon a Time, and while Team Scorpion tried to cope with the very likely possibility that Megan was going to die on Scorpion, we did have to say goodbye to Francis on Reign.
What did you think of this week on TV? Here’s what some of our staff had to say.
Most Shocking Moment?
Lizzie: Barry announces he can’t feel his legs, on The Flash. Okay, look, Barry runs. That’s what he does. The show is called The Flash. A Barry who CAN’T run, much less walk can’t really be the superhero we want, or the one Central City needs. And that’s scary. That’s a game-changer. And they did this in a random episode! This was not the midseason finale, not the season premiere, which made it all the more unexpected – and amazing.
Jenn S: The Ressler/Samar hook-up on The Blacklist. I mean, I get that they were both feeling really emotionally vulnerable, but I’ve never really gotten anything but platonic vibes from the two of them. And how is Aram, sweet little puppy that he is, going to feel when he finds out about this?!
Christine: Caroline and Alaric engaged in the future on The Vampire Diaries. WHAT. THE. WHAT? I need an explanation, like, now.
Jessica: Ivan’s suicide on Madam Secretary. I really thought that he would take asylum and was shocked that he would rather die than put his family in danger by him coming out of the closet. It’s a daily reminder that while we can live our lives in relative freedom others cannot. Particularly members of the Russian military.
Allison: I agree with Jessica. Ivan’s suicide on Madam Secretary was completely unexpected. He would rather die than admit who he truly is and who he loves. Being a good Russian soldier is all that matters to him, even more important than living. I can’t wrap my head around that.
Caralynn: The Countess tells Liz Taylor she can have Tristan — only to suddenly cut Tristan’s throat with her scary glove claw thing on American Horror Story: Hotel. It was tragic! While not totally unexpected (because Lady Gaga’s Countess is 1) a vampire and 2) known to be prone to reacting violently when jealous), it was utterly heartbreaking! Out of left field as it was, Denis O’Hare and Finn Wittrock really sold that romance in the one episode they had for it. Also I thought I would have more Finn Wittrock screentime to look forward to. Sad face.
Funniest Moment?
Lizzie: Cat Grant asks Supergirl if she’s thinking about starting a family, on Supergirl. It was equal parts sad and funny, funny because, well, we’ve all gotten that question, haven’t we? It seems like people feel that’s a fair question for any woman over 18 (Pssst, it isn’t) and sad because, shouldn’t Cat know better than to ask a question she’d absolutely not want anyone to ask her?
Jenn: S Basically everything that happened on this week’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was hilarious, but the icing on the cake was the “I’m a Good Person” song, which apart from being absolutely perfect. is also stuck in my head. This show continues to impress me and make me laugh. #humbleandblessed
Christine: I’m also going with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Darryl’s song, “I Love My Daughter” about loving his daughter, but you know, not in a creepy way. The perfect country parody, complete with cowboy boots and random shots of horses. I laughed so hard, my stomach hurt!
Jessica: While Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was delightfully bizarre this week especially Paula taking over the office. I’m giving funniest moment to Louis and Jessica on Fresh Off the Boat and their delightful banter involving birthday balloons for Eddie. How can you not laugh at Louis obvious prodding Jessica that he was going to get carried away by the balloons and her response “Just let a few go. You’re in control! They are not in control!” Delightful! and just thinking about it brings a smile to my face.
Allison: Now I’m sad that I’m so far behind on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. I really enjoyed Brian hacking ADIC Johnson’s phone on Limitless and texting everyone on Johnson’s contact list that Johnson has a micropenis. It was such a Brian thing to do. He crosses boundaries for fun, and it’s one of the many reasons why I love him. What was even better was that Naz made a comment to Johnson about his condition, as she put it.
Caralynn: The Whole Foods scene in You’re the Worst, where Gretchen reluctantly accompanies Jimmy’s small-town, kind of trashy Brit family members to the supermarket. Jimmy’s one sister, Fiona, who has been droning on and on about working at a Tesco the entire episode, is totally overwhelmed by the Whole Foods atmosphere. She stands in front of the many varieties of apple and wonders if they’re all real. So many funny things. The show is amazing and I don’t understand how more people aren’t watching!

Saddest Moment?
Lizzie: Nimue choosing revenge over love, on Once Upon A Time. If I’m going to be fair, I’d been expecting this, but that doesn’t mean seeing it play out didn’t break my heart. When Nimue stands there, with Vortigan’s heart in her hands, Merlin tells her that if she does this, she won’t just be damning her, she’ll be damning them both – that’s how much he loves her, but still she picks darkness, and a she turns into the Dark One you can literally see Merlin’s heart break along with ours.
Jenn S: Walter refusing to acknowledge that Megan is dying on this week’s Scorpion continues to break my heart. In spite of everyone telling him that he needs to deal with and process his emotions, he’s totally in denial that he has limited time left with her. His confrontation with Sylvester over Megan’s wishes was like a punch to the gut.
Christine: I’m agreeing with Lizzie here on Once Upon a Time. I felt terrible for Merlin…and now he’s stuck under Arthur’s control! Merlin needs a win STAT.
Jessica: Francis sacrificing himself so that Mary will live on Reign. I didn’t think that he actual death would affect me as much as it did. I feel horrible for Mary and for Catherine but am looking forward to them pairing up to secure the regency for Charles.
Allison: LA LA LA I DON’T SEE YOUR REIGN ANSWER, JESSICA! I HAVEN’T WATCHED IT YET. The internet spoiled me already though, so it’s not your fault. Can Francis’ death be my answer even though I haven’t seen it? I’m already sad about it. I’m not ready.
Caralynn: Not-Jo dying and her goodbye with Alaric on The Vampire Diaries was weirdly moving given that this lady was 100% not Alaric’s wife, but instead a rando amnesiac vampire. The emotion felt very raw and when Alaric was crying, saying it had been so good to hear Jo’s voice again it was… UGH. So heartbreaking. I love Matt Davis in this role and I really wish poor Alaric would catch a break. Not that I see his three-years-in-the-future-timeline engagement to Caroline ending particularly well. Sigh.
