Quantico Review: God (Season 1 Episode 6)
The thing we love about Quantico is that it’s different. It has a strong female protagonist, the show is rooted in a conspiracy, and despite the fact that the storytelling has given you compelling reasons to care for most of the characters they’ve presented, they’ve also made it clear that absolutely everyone is keeping secrets. On Quantico, no one is exactly who you think they are.
And that’s good. No, that’s perfect.
Except that in this episode, Quantico forgets all about the conspiracy and goes full blown soap opera with the romances.
Now, don’t get us wrong, we love a good romance as much as anyone. We just don’t love when the romance overshadows the conspiracy, and when things are brought up and then seemingly dropped because the show would rather focus on how many women Ryan can have sex with in the shower.
But hey, at least Ryan’s relationships advance the plot. Alex was bound to find out about his assignment, so it almost feels like a good thing that she found out so soon. And Caleb and Shelby? Well, there’s something there, something that goes beyond romance, though there isn’t anything (yet) that would explain why Shelby would go from the softie we saw in Quantico to sleeping with Caleb’s dad.
There’s also no way to explain the Caleb feels that overtook us as we watched this episode. Is this guy the same jerk we couldn’t stand from a few episodes ago? We’re not even sure at this point, because right now, all we want to do is cuddle the poor guy.
But that’s about all the good things we have to say about the relationships on this episode. Why do we have to spend so much time with Miranda and her kid? Why is Liam even there? Why are we supposed to care? In fact, the only good thing about this story-line was that it led to Alex discovering Ryan, and by extension, Liam, which seems like one of those things that’s going to blow up in her face and maybe, maybe, lead to …you know, being framed as a terrorist. That kind of thing.
Simon uncovering the twin’s secret was interesting, but overall, didn’t do much for the plot either – mostly because this episode had no plot other than everyone is screwing everyone and oh, yes, Alex is still on the run. But it’s okay, because Shelby’s got the most messed up love triangle in the history of the universe in her hands.
Caleb showing up wasn’t surprising, and the fact that one of the twins was in Grand Central two days before the bomb isn’t either. They needed to bring both of them in. What is surprising is the fact that Caleb went from analyst to the fastest rising agent in the FBI. Add that to the list of things we don’t understand.
And boy is that list getting long. Quantico has been great so far, but there comes a point where you have to start giving people answers, or all of this will become too complicated to follow along. We’ve got too many questions right now, and few precious answers. We need to be able to scratch someone from my list. We need to be able to trust someone. Otherwise, what’s the point?
Other things to note:
- We’re very glad SOMEONE figured out Ryan is helping Alex. He wasn’t being very subtle about it.
- Miranda was all like, either figure out my secret or you’ll be gone – but, unlike in the first few episodes, it doesn’t seem like she cut anyone, which is surprising considering the fact that everyone treated this exercise like a joke.
- Despite the whole “having an affair with your father” thing, We’re way more into Caleb and Shelby than we are into Alex and Ryan. Is that wrong?
