Emmys 2015: 9 Memorable Moments

Emmys 2015: 9 Memorable Moments

EMMYS, Game of Thrones, How To Get Away With Murder, Mad Men, News, Orange Is the New Black

Anyone been watching HBO lately?

The 67th Emmy Awards turned out to be a big night for Game of Thrones, Veep, and Olive Kitteridge — all shows that air on HBO. Netflix and Amazon also scored some wins, with Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, and Transparent.

But we love watching The Emmy’s for other reasons than just to find out if our favorite shows won. We like to see the monologues, we like to see the actors from all of the current shows (and there are a LOT) in the same room, and we like to be entertained. To that end, I have a few of the most memorable moments from The 67th Emmy Awards.

1. The Opening Number.

Besides the appearances of a few key actors and a joke about Castle, the opening number also points out how MUCH television there is available, with so many different ways to watch. Yeah, it can definitely be overwhelming.

2. Allison Janney bursts into song.

For her role on Mom, Allison Janney received the award for best supporting actress in a comedy. She sang part of her acceptance speech, thanking a long list of people, then on a more serious note, stated that “So many lives are touched by addiction, and it is a privilege to work on a show that reminds us that there is hope.”

3. Jeffrey Tambor dedicates his award to the transgender community.

This was Jeffrey Tambor’s first Emmy win, and first time nominated as a lead actor. He said of his role in Transparent, “I had a teacher who used to say, ‘when you act, you have to act as if your life depends on it.’ And now I’ve been given the opportunity to act because peoples’ lives depend on it.” This is also the first time an Emmy has been awarded for a transgender role.

4. Amy Poehler sports a hoodie.

No, Amy Poehler didn’t win an Emmy for role as Leslie Knope on Parks and Recreation, and I may be bitter about that fact for a while. But she still reminded us of how incredibly awesome she is.

5. “I’d like to give the world an Emmy.”

Honestly, I think I would have been disappointed if there hadn’t been a spoof of the Mad Men finale. The spoof takes a bit of a different turn though, with an appearance from Jim O’Heir, who is met with an unfortunate accident. Jerry always has the worst luck.

6. Uzo Aduba gets emotional.

Winning for supporting actress in a drama for role in Orange is the New Black (this year considered a drama rather than a comedy), Uzo Aduba gave a tearful speech in which she told Jenji Kohan that if she thanked her a thousand times, it will wouldn’t be enough.

7. Jon Hamm Climbs on stage to receive his award.

The first Emmy win and 16th nomination for Jon Hamm, it was basically about time for him to be recognized for his role as Don Draper on Mad Men. When his name was called, he casually climbed upon the stage before giving a humbled, grateful speech.

8. Viola Davis makes history.

Viola Davis became the first African-American woman to win outstanding actress in a drama series, winning for her role as Annalise Keating on How to Get Away with Murder. “Let me tell you something. The only thing that separates women of color from anything else is opportunity,” she said after quoting Harriet Tubman.

9. Tracy Morgan presents the final award of the night.

We were promised a special guest a the end of the awards, and that special guest made us pull out our box of Kleenex once again. Tracy Morgan talked briefly about his traumatic injury before cracking a few jokes, and then presented the award for best drama.
