Teen Wolf Review: Strange Frequencies (Season 5 Episode 7)

Reviews, Teen Wolf

So, if you’ve been keeping up with my reviews about Teen Wolf, you’d know that I’ve been confused, and just very on the fence about everything so far. I’ve stuck by the fact that I know something crazy will happen, and everything will neatly tie every plot point back together, and that Jeff Davis knows what he’s doing.

Does all that happen this episode? No.

But finally, probably since the premiere of this season, I was on the edge of my seat for the full hour.

This week’s episode, entitled “Strange Frequencies” picks up right where we left off: on the rooftop with Stiles and Theo talking about Donovan. These two spend a lot of time together this episode, camped out in a car, while the others put their plan in action. That’s when Stiles voices his greatest fear — something that’s been eating at him for probably weeks. His fear of losing Scott as a friend. The weirdest part of this scene though, has to be when Theo’s logic is justified as he says that if Scott is willing to lose Stiles’ friendship over Donovan, then he isn’t a true alpha. In my opinion, a true friend either. I mean, really — what good is a friendship that can’t withstand a couple of murders?

The rest of the episode mostly takes part in the school (surprise! surprise!) as the gang tries to use Hayden as bait to lure out at least one of the doctors. I’ve been wondering how I feel about Hayden and Liam for a while now, and I’ve decided they are not my favourite at all. All these feelings set Liam back as a character, and I just do not understand what he sees in Hayden.

Anyway, his feelings for her result in a double kidnapping by the doctors, so… maybe rethink this Liam. Please.

So, we come back to The Dread Doctors. Okay, serious question: is anyone really afraid of them? Raise your hand please. Because I’m not. They don’t come across scary at all. Their slow mo thing is getting a bit old, and I don’t even know what I should be afraid of. All I know is that they have the ability to really incapacitate our main characters.

And that’s what they do! Lydia’s tongue is pulled out, and Kira kills Scott! Of course, it’s just a figment of their imagination, but it is still the highlight of the episode. What isn’t a figment of anyone’s imagination Parrish sending a fireball directly at the car Theo and Stiles are in? Remember that quick flash in the premiere that Lydia had of Stiles in a car crash, turned upside down, unconscious? This is it! And he doesn’t die! All thanks to Theo!

The audience knows that Theo is up to no good, but Jeff Daniel’s has said that Theo’s intentions come from very human emotions — so I’m not quite sure that he’s 100% evil. He saves Stiles doesn’t he? He can’t be 100% evil.

The episode ends with the gang waking up from their visions, Hayden and Liam kidnapped, and Mama McCaul coming home to a girl stabbed in the head with Kira’s sword on her kitchen table.

All in all, the episode doesn’t really do much. Even Mama McCaul and Papa Stilinski’s cute (!) hospital investigation doesn’t do much. But this whole episode is obviously trying to show us that Teen Wolf still knows what it’s doing. I cannot wait to see what happens next!
