Teen Wolf Review: Ouroboros (Season 5 Episode 8)

Reviews, Teen Wolf

A lot of things happened on this week’s Teen Wolf. We get our first glimpse at the desert wolf, and the Layden ship finally sets sail!

But of course, some of the most pressing matters — like anything related to the dread doctors, or why Sheriff Stilinski has decided that now is the time that no one is above the law — are not answered in the slightest.

And that is my biggest frustration with “Ouroboros.”

It feels so redundant to just state that I am confused. I have been for so long, that it’s starting to get frustrating. Sure, we get a couple of minutes every couple of episodes where we find ourselves forgetting how confused we are — distracted by dream sequences of our favorite characters dying, but all in all, Season 5 of Teen Wolf has been all over the place, and this week’s episode is no different.

The number one priority this week is to get Liam and Hayden back. What I like about this storyline is that it shows Scott’s strengths and weaknesses. He doesn’t think through things all the time, but he is willing to do everything and anything for his pack. The ending scene with Scott sitting in his room, telling his mom that something’s different — something’s changed, and it’s his fault, really got to me.

This could be alluding to the fact that for one, Stiles still hasn’t told Scott that he killed Donovan. No matter what, if these two are as good as best friends as they say there, Scott should be feeling like Scott is holding something back. And second of all, I think the dream sequences that the Dread Doctors can enforce, has everyone doubting each other to some level.

Like Scott doubting Kira. When Kira asks Scott if he really thinks she killed that girl in his mom’s kitchen, he hesitates before saying no. We’ve known for a while now that the fox has been taking over Kira — but did anyone think it was from literally the premiere? This means Kira was probably one of the first kids to be affected by the Dread Doctors! Why though? Is there any significance behind that?

Either way, Kira departing, or leaving for a while is the first step in fracturing Scott’s pack or place as the alpha. Which leads me to believe that this was Theo’s plan all along. He has finally found a place in Scott’s pack (and in our gang as the new Hero) — after saving Liam and Hayden — when they are the most vulnerable.

And though he may not be a wolf, we do get to see Stiles vulnerable as well. The death of Donovan is still haunting him, and to make matters worse, for some reason, his dad has decided that he’s had enough of the supernatural world and is going to proceed with all cases in the most human, and normal way possible.

This feels a bit out of character for Papa Stilinski if I’m being honest, because it seems to be out of the blue. He’s been making sarcastic remarks about how obscure everything sounds since he first learned about their world, but to suddenly be against is, doesn’t make any sense. Especially since his kid is involved in all things supernatural! I’m hoping this doesn’t last very long. Nothing is more off putting than a character who doesn’t see reason.

Though the acting in this episode was fantastic — Scott’s asthma attack, Stiles shakily throwing away his library card, Mama McCaul’s slap and frustration with Papa Stilinski, and Liam and Hayden scared and in pain- the whole episode just didn’t seem to connect together. I do hope there will be some way to bring all these storylines together, and connect all the dots.

Things to think about:

  • The little montage at the end of everyone hugging and throwing a small blanket over Layden made me smile a very sincere smile. Yay for friendship, everyone!
  • How long do you think Mama McCaul and Papa Stilinski will be mad at each other?
  • Did Scott end up dropping AP Biology?
