Arrow: 12 Underrated Moments That Made Us Fall In Love With #Olicity

Arrow, Lists

Like the little ship that could, Arrow’s Olicity just keeps chugging along, gaining fans, awards. and accolades.

It’s happening at such an astonishing rate, that it’s sometimes hard to forget there was a time when Stephen Amell was supposed to just look pretty and Emily Bett Rickards was working in a dog shop.

Ever since our favorite leading lady chewed on that red pen and Oliver approached her with his very first excuse, we’ve been all about Olicity.

Maybe it was the chemistry between these two sensational actors. Maybe it was the writing. Perhaps it was just a matter of fate.

Either way, at this point, we have to wonder: what would our TV viewing experience be like without Oliver’s puppy dog eyes and Felicity innuendo-ridden rambles?

We honestly can’t imagine. And we don’t really want to.

Oliver and Felicity’s relationship has had a bit of everything: innuendos, shirtlessness, friendship, embarrassment, fancy dresses, suits, leather, short skirts, I love yous, tears, smiles, and of course, porches and sunsets. But it’s also had a lot of quiet moments, a lot of building blocks.

That’s the mark of a great love story, how it gently intertwines the big and the mundane, the common and the extraordinary. We never imagined, three years ago, when Oliver Queen first got off the island, that we’d be waxing poetic about the love story on Arrow. But here we are, and we might as well give credit where credit is due.

So, in honor of Oliver and Felicity, here are the twelve underrated moments that made us fall in love with these two crazy kids.

1. This is the IT Department. It’s not the ladies room.

Olicity wasn’t even in the plans then, people tell me. You’re finding clues where there are none. But, but …I tell them. Look at Stephen Amell’s face. Just look at it.

That’s the face of an actor who knows something. Felicity makes a little quip, and it’s not strange, she’s made quips before, and Oliver has smiled before, but there’s a moment there, before he even gets to ask her for help, where his face softens and everything just…shifts.

2. Don’t worry Felicity, they don’t send blondes there.

It’s not just about Oliver making a joke, though, Wow, Oliver, you can make a joke. Go you! It’s mostly about Felicity’s easy response, and about the fact that Oliver actually leans forward to check.

I repeat, he leans forward to check her hair. They’re joking in the middle of a tense moment, and it’s light and fun. Oliver is having fun. Before this, I wasn’t even sure Oliver knew what that word meant.

3. Not bad for someone who got a ‘D’ in tenth grade algebra.

This moment gets me for many, many reasons. One, Felicity is never one to downplay her abilities in front of Oliver. Two, she actually looked him up.

Like, she did a background check on Oliver, probably long before she found out he was the Arrow. And, as if that isn’t enough, there’s also Oliver’s standard smile/laugh I can’t help it but find her endearing thing that he only ever does with Felicity.

4. I need a girl Wednesday.

Am I the only one who finds it hilarious that Oliver doesn’t seem to get any pop-culture reference, even if those references predate his time on the island? I really hope Felicity is taking this summer to show him the wonders of Netflix (among other things).

Felicity is obviously angry, and she doesn’t really hold back. Everyone seems to hold back with Oliver, his family, hell, even Diggle at this point — but not Felicity, no. She is the exception to that rule. (And to every other rule.)

5. I would like you to pull your head out of Central City and get back in the game.

Felicity’s response of, “Sure, just after you get yours out of your ass” is not the only brilliant thing in this scene. The fact that she’s willing to utter those words to Oliver is just as important.

We’ve already established Felicity isn’t shy about telling Oliver what she thinks, and in this particular episode, she’ll also prove that she is more than the bumbling love-struck assistant. She’s earned the right to the moniker Oliver bestows upon her later, when he asks for forgiveness. Partner.

6. You certainly know how to talk yourself out of a victory.

It’s a gift, says Oliver, but what’s really a gift for us viewers is the lightness Felicity brings, not just to the show in general, but to Oliver in particular. Sullen Oliver is, somehow, just by being in proximity with Felicity, less grumpy, much more willing to crack a joke, and gasp, even make fun of himself.

  • Awesome list! Olicity is one of the reasons I stayed watching this show. Their chemistry and dynamic is magical to watch. I really hope they go the distance.

    • Me too, absolutely. Stephen Amell is very, VERY good looking, but even that would have gotten old at some point if it were not for Felicity.

    • That’s the exact reason I love watching the show.? The chemistry between these two actors is incredible, endearing, sexy, romantic, gives me Goosebumps.?They really know how to get the fans to love them together and want more! Now being in between the last season 7 ands waiting for the final 10 episodes in the final season 8, I literally skip to and mostly enjoy watching the episodes and moments where Olicity is together, wether it’s saving, worrying, the subtle looks they give ri each other, the way Oliver always leans in, gets close to felicity, the innocent but not meant to be touching of each other, just every moment they have together in them ways is what truly makes the show much more awesome than it already is.!
I really hate how it takes them ESPECIALLY Felicity to say I love you, scene in watching right now for example where Oliver is most likely to be flung off to his death, tells her I love you (for the second time) and yet she just stands there, knowing thinking dreading that it will probably be the last time she sees him) I mean come on writers.. you all need to get your head out of your asses!
And even though I am a total 100% die hard fan of Olicity, I really hate the way they constantly make them not be together, or throw something stupid at them to separate them once they finally are. And the way they make felicity, with her total BS of being the biggest hypocrite there is, being able to forgive every one else but Oliver, making her break his heart being so cruel with her words and unforgiving. And when it comes to their relationship or working things out with Oliver she just totally shuts down gets passive doesn’t say anything ri fight for and to keep what they have or should have, I’s ridiculous.. when it comes to ANY THING else the girl can’t keep her mouth shut, her comments to herself, giving her all so perfect speeches, fighting to make things right.. she always, always has something to say, except when it comes to Oliver than she either doesn’t do anything or becomes a heartless cruel bitch, giving no sensitivity what so ever to his feelings. And I’m sorry but that man treats hey like she is perfect, always bowing down to her, apologizing even when she’s 100% wrong, tells her every second how smart wonderful amazing she is goe lucky he is to have her how much her loves her, if I could find a man that treated me ike that, never mind his gorgeous face and drop dead body, I would NEVER give up on him, and I’d always forgive him, because I know just how much he loves me and the way he looks at me, (never mind every one that is in their lives is constantly telling her how much he loves her how lucky she is and how you can’t deny the love he has just by that way he looks at you. Saying all this and could throw sooo much more into this.. I still love Olicity, but I think it is more because how happy he is when he is with her.. seeing Oliver happy like that makes it all worth it for me.! (; ok sorry for the very long post
      #Olicity ?

  • Couldn’t agree more. Found your insights of the scenes on point. Looking forward for more of this in season 4.

    • Can you IMAGINE sappy Oliver? He was already making heart eyes at her back in season 1, now that’s he’s free to show how he feels? I CAN’T WAIT.

  • Loved the list! Olicity is the main reason I watch Arrow. I loved reading your comments on each moment. I enjoy reading people’s perspectives and interpretations on Olicity moments because it’s usually things I don’t notice on my own. Great job!

  • I would also have included the scene in “Three Ghosts” when Felicity runs to Oliver and hugs him when he comes down the Foundry stairs. Her hug is sweet, but Oliver’s reaction makes it even better because he hugs her and lingers in the moment. He continues the embrace even as he responds to Diggle’s question, and then he looks down at Felicity for one long moment before stepping away. Moments later, Felicity puts his mask on him for the first time and calls him a hero (another great moment!).

    • I found that to be a moment people notice more, which is why I didn’t include it but yes, it IS a great moment. I think it’s the first time he lets himself linger. And, also, it’s one of those STEPHEN YOUR OLICITY SHIPPER IS SHOWING moments. Because Stephen Amell is an even bigger shipper than us.

  • Wow… love it.
In my list it is also the moment in 3×08 when Cisco and Caitlin are in the Arrowcave and Oliver is uncomfortable with them and points out to Felicity saying “You see what you’ve done?”. The response of Felicity touching her earring and everything in between that scene it’s just lovely.

    • I love that one! I almost added the moment from the coffee shop, when Oliver agrees to help Barry, because it’s such a cute moment. And later on, when they’re saying goodbye and Oliver is CLEARLY uncomfortable with Iris checking him out, while Felicity is all like, yeah, he’s pretty, isn’t he?

      Too many moments, I swear.

The crossovers are great, because when they get to interact with new characters, the new characters are like, eh, guys …there’s something going on here, right? We see it. IT’S OBVIOUS.

  • I loved the list and the fact that you pointed out the little things.
One of my favourite underrated moment is in episode 2×04 when Felicity tells Oliver “I believe you ordered the crate of stolen military weapons, Mr. Queen?” and Oliver’s smile is PRICELESS.
From that scene I also love the following conversation b/n Oliver and Felicity:
Felicity: “Guess which company designed the tracking system the army uses? I’ll give you a hint – their CEO, always late.” Oliver: “Nice” …and he is saying it ironically

    • That is one of my all-time fave Felicity/Olicity moments. My only disagreement is that I think his look was pure lust. It was probably the “Mr. Queen” that did it.

    • You know what I love? That there are SO many moments to choose from. I still wonder at people looking the show and going, Olciity? Nah. I don’t see it. Because …how can you NOT? It’s everywhere.

  • Does anyone know the episode numbers for all of these amazing moments?
