The Mindy Project Recap: What to Expect When You’re Expanding (Season 3 Episode 20)

The Mindy Project

This week on The Mindy Project “What to Expect When You’re Expecting”, Mindy is starting to feel the impacts of being pregnant… and she’s not liking it.

In the opening scene, Mindy realizes the only outfit that fits her is actually a sleeping bag that Danny bought at Target. Danny tries to console her, but Mindy is feeling unattractive and hormonal. She’s not glowing, she explains to him, she’s sweating from trying to fit into a pair of jeans. She’s so disgusted with herself that she doesn’t even want to have sex with Danny anymore. So you can imagine how she feels when she shows up to work (in a track suit) and is told that a new practice picture needs to be taken right now. Always the skilled bargainer, Mindy manages to buy herself a day to get her “skinny” dress back from the dry cleaner.

Unfortunately, when she tries on the dress, she rips it. Twice.

Time to call in the big guns, aka Laverne Cox, guest staring as Tamra’s cousin slash aspiring stylist, Sheena.

Sheena and Tamra attempt to pull Mindy out of her rut by teaching her some fierce posing tricks and confidence boosting dance moves. Mindy leaves her style session feeling much better about herself.

But Danny messes that up… of course. When Danny sees Mindy with her new look (a full body leopard leotard and some shiny accessories) he can’t help but laugh, sending Mindy right back into “I feel ugly” mode.

I have to stop here and say that I know Danny was trying, but he’s just kinda the worst. He knows Mindy is vulnerable, yet he doesn’t seem to realize why she’s upset. Plus, he does the whole ‘I love you no matter how you look’ thing which is not romantic or sweet at all. Why do people think that is a romantic thing to say? It makes it sound like you look bad!

Okay, rant over.

Mindy goes back to work more dejected than ever. When Tamra and Sheena get wind of Danny laughing, Sheena gives him a piece of her mind. She explains, much more eloquently than I just tried to above, that it is his only job to make her feel comfortable while she has the much harder job of growing their child. Danny goes home and tells Mindy that she is beautiful, and that the most beautiful thing about her is her confidence. Amen, Danny! And just like that, overly confident Mindy is back.

In other news, the boys attend a singles pajama party (yes, you read that right) and encounter Jessica working the room. Danny confronts her and she admits that she’s thinking about breaking up with Morgan because he’s gained some weight. Yikes. When Mindy hears about this she confronts Jessica and defends Morgan’s worth (while simultaneously realizing she is also worthy of love). Also, Jessica is still a hoarder.

We also learn that Peter and Lauren are getting married (through a truly epic wedding invitation that requires guests to sext their RSVPs). Jeremy also learns this and decides to get back into the dating world. He starts with this bossy lady:

…and joins the staff picture at the last minute, clearly wearing walk of shame attire.
