The Mindy Project Recap: Confessions of a Catho-holic

For once, this week’s The Mindy Project, “Confessions of a Cathoholic” isn’t about something Mindy messed up. Instead, Danny is in the hot seat for the little mistake of killing his priest. Spoilers ahead!

Okay, Danny doesn’t kill his priest, exactly. Like, not with his bare hands. But, his confession sorta seems to do the job since Father Francis drops dead after Danny (finally) confesses that he got a non-catholic girl pregnant… out of wedlock.

Hell bent on confessing so he can move on from his guilt, Danny convinces Mindy to attend the funeral so they can meet the new priest. Who is this new priest?

Stephen Colbert, of course!

Colbert plays Father Mike, who Danny knows from childhood. Danny is extremely relieved to find out that Mike is the new priest, because Danny knows his past and it’s, um, sketchy.

Father Mike confirms this by giving a long speech (at the funeral… awkward!) about his past life. He admits to a long list of bad boy behavior (including sleeping with approximately 275 people) but, just when Danny thinks he’s in the clear, Father Mike explains that he’s now reformed and more conservative than ever! He goes on to lambast Father Francis for being too lenient (still at the funeral… still awkward). At this point, Danny knows he’s screwed.

Instead of dropping the issue like everyone, including Danny’s mother, suggests, Danny pushes on. He simply must confess. To try to get Father Mike to like him, Danny invites him over for dinner. Father Mike happily accepts, saying he just loves a good meal cooked by a Catholic woman.

Instead of correcting him, Danny goes along with it, which I guess is fair, since Mindy has lied about a zillion times about Danny.

Knowing that this dinner is important to Danny, Mindy enlists Morgan to text her throughout to give her talking points. This seems to work, and Mindy even comes off as a bit of a Bible expert. Mindy keeps up the charade until she gets so fed up with Danny’s behavior (at one point, he makes her sneak into the bathroom to hide some condoms while Father Mike is peeing) that she goes to bed.

Just when it seems like Danny is in the clear, Father Mike notices an ultrasound. Unable to hide his pride for his unborn baby, Danny comes clean. Mindy overhears this and knows that Danny’s got her back after all.

To reciprocate, Mindy promises to raise the baby Catholic (and reminds Father Mike that the church isn’t really in the position to turn down young members).

Also, both Mindy and Danny refer to the baby as ‘he,’ so it looks like it’s a boy!
