Review: Better Call Saul, “Nacho”

Better Call Saul, Reviews

I have to say, I wasn’t really sure what direction Better Call Saul would take. I mentioned last week that the story of Jimmy McGill seemed awfully similar to that of Walter White, and I think last night’s episode, “Nacho,” shows that even further.

Jimmy McGill is a guy you just have to root for. He’s not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but he’s trying his best at life. He does what he think is best when he warns the Kettlemans. He also doesn’t set up Nacho like Nacho assumes he has. But no matter what happens, it seems the world is against him. Heck, he can’t even catch a break with Mike the parking attendant.

So of course, we want to see a win for Jimmy McGill when he tries to convince everyone that the Kettlemans kidnapped themselves. Even in trying to prove that, it’s a struggle. He literally walks through the desert to find them, and when he finally does, it’s incredibly gratifying.

I’m interested in learning more about the relationship Jimmy has with Kim Wexler. From what we know now, it’s complex and a bit secretive. It also looks like Kim makes a great counterpart to Jimmy. The bigger question, and something that will be intriguing for the entire series, is what is going to happen to that relationship over the next several years. After all, this all leads to Saul Goodman and Breaking Bad.

And I’m even more interested in seeing how the relationship with Mike develops. It’s poetic how they meet, but we finally find Mike to be a little more of the guy we knew in Breaking Bad when he decides to take Jimmy’s side instead of pressing charges. It’s another victory for Jimmy in this episode, and in some ways, it’s the bigger one.
