Crystal Lake Season 1 Review: An Intriguing Friday the 13th Prequel With Pros and Cons

Reviews

Peacock’s Crystal Lake offers a thrilling backstory for one of horror’s most iconic franchises, Friday the 13th, but it has both strengths and weaknesses.

The prequel puts a unique spin on the original Friday the 13th lore, providing more depth to both Pamela and Jason Voorhees.

Crystal Lake focuses primarily on Pamela and Jason, but it also introduces several new characters, each raising the stakes differently.

Grace, Lee, Briana, and Dorf are four new characters in the Friday the 13th universe who round out the story while enriching both Pamela and Jason’s characters.

Lee is Pamela’s love interest, often grounding her back to reality when she starts hallucinating. He is her anchor, which results in Pamela genuinely feeling torn about whether to continue her killing spree or attempt to heal after Jason’s death.

Lee is also the town’s sheriff, investigating Pamela’s crimes without realizing she is the perpetrator. It creates a fascinating push-and-pull dynamic between the characters, heightening their already amazingly intense chemistry.

Of course, Lee cannot run Crystal Lake’s police department by himself. His deputy is Dorf, a character determined to prove himself as a police officer.

While this arc runs parallel to the main narrative, Dorf’s insecurities pay off in a fierce showdown that might help him in future seasons when Pamela continues wreaking havoc on the town.

On the other hand, there is Grace, a young girl who is Jason’s only friend before his untimely death. Her significance grows as the narrative progresses because Pamela is desperate to fill the void Jason leaves in her heart.

Grace is Pamela’s chance to have a child again, and Pamela will do anything to support her however she thinks is best.

Pamela Voorhees: I just wanted to talk, and you had to be cruel! All you people, you just push, and you push, and you push, and you think nobody’s ever going to push back, but you’re fucking wrong! I couldn’t save my son, but I could save her.

Pamela is a good mother, but Jason’s death certainly changes her tactics. She will do what she believes is best for Grace, even if it involves killing people.

Grace is Pamela’s second chance, a way for Pamela to relieve some of the gut-wrenching guilt she feels over Jason’s death. It makes their dynamic quite compelling, especially considering Grace’s own guilt surrounding Jason’s death, and how Pamela might react if she knew the real circumstances.

The most interesting new character is Briana — a journalist and Lee’s sister — because she drives the most exciting storyline forward. Crystal Lake portrays Pamela’s mysterious past in fragments, and it only unravels as Briana learns the truth.

Briana’s quest to uncover Pamela’s secrets is by far the best part of the show. It is consistently entertaining, even when other storylines drag on for no reason.

In fact, the first half of Crystal Lake is exceptionally slow at times, with the only appealing plot being Pamela’s past, which is only accessible through Briana’s investigation.

It is difficult to keep up with the narrative as some aspects feel unnecessary, such as Pamela’s extended adventure with Rita or the bear hunt. These storylines could have been shortened to avoid confusion since it is easy to get lost in the overarching narrative.

Thankfully, the show finally ramps things up on Season 1, Episode 5, “The New Blood,” and the remaining episodes are impossible to look away from.

The horror elements in Crystal Lake mostly fit with the genre, from drawn-out scenes to a suspenseful musical score.

Claudette and Barry’s car scene is a great example, and the show deals with their characters brilliantly. It seems like their deaths cannot be particularly scary because Friday the 13th already portrays them in the first scene.

However, Crystal Lake exceeds expectations and somehow makes them even more horrifying with the twist surrounding the person behind the camera.

While most of the horror elements are well executed, a few moments fall flat because of the prolonged storylines in the first half of the show.

When Willow, a hitchhiker looking for work, arrives in town and goes searching for the campgrounds, her death is inevitable. However, adding her character suddenly before the storylines reach their full potential makes her death scene more boring than scary.

The saving grace in scenes like Willow’s death involves the iconic throwback to Friday the 13th‘s camera usage, where the show portrays the scene through the killer’s eyes.

The highlight of Crystal Lake is Linda Cardellini’s performance as Pamela Voorhees.

All the actors do terrific jobs of portraying their characters, but Cardellini takes it to the next level. Writing additional backstory for a character is not enough — finding the right actor is critical to bring the narrative to life.

No one could portray Pamela Voorhees the way Linda Cardellini does; her performance is in the same league as the iconic Betsy Palmer.

Crystal Lake Season 1 Episode 8, “The Final Chapter,” delivers an epic showdown with additional room for a second season.

There is still a lot of potential to unpack, especially with Lee’s unknown fate, Bellflower’s company status, and Grace’s future.

Pamela Voorhees: He’s gone. You can’t hurt him anymore. None of you can, not anymore. Jason is strong. My son is stronger than anybody ever gave him credit for. You better just stay away.

Season 1 concludes satisfactorily, but it would be a disservice to the story to end here when there is so much left to tell in the years before Friday the 13th.
