Afterlife with Archie Ordered to Series at Disney+
The world of Archie Comics is making a comeback once again with another supernatural drama. Afterlife with Archie looks to shake things up for everyone’s favorite town: Riverdale!
Deadline confirmed that Afterlife with Archie has been picked up by Disney+. The series will premiere in 2027 during the Halloween season.
Archie Comics fans best know this franchise thanks to The CW’s Riverdale, which became one of the studio’s most popular shows. Fortunately, a few familiar creatives will also be developing the upcoming series.
Riverdale writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will be developing Afterlife with Archie alongside Greg Berlanti. Aguirre-Sacasa also previously wrote for Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
Afterlife with Archie follows Archie and friends in the iconic town of Riverdale once again. This time, they’re stuck in a zombie apocalypse, but they still have to deal with teen drama.
According to the synopsis, a certain “teen witch” causes the apocalypse, which will test Archie and his friends both physically and emotionally.
The original Afterlife with Archie comic series began in 2013 and was written by Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla.
It was published under the Archie Comics horror imprint, Archie Horror, which also featured Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
“This was the comic book that started it all. Before there was a Riverdale, before there was a Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, there was Afterlife with Archie,” Aguirre-Sacasa said in a statement, per Variety.
“Getting to turn Afterlife into a TV series for the amazing team at Disney+ with our incredible partners at Berlanti Productions, WB and, of course, Jon (Goldwater) and his Archie family is truly a full-circle moment — and the ultimate dream project for me,” Aguirre-Sacasa added.
“Afterlife with Archie has always been about more than just zombies — it’s about the friendships, loyalty and humanity that make Riverdale worth fighting for,” Ayo Davis, Disney Kids & Family president, stated.
“Fans are going to fall hard for this new version of the gang … and maybe scream a little too,” Davis continued.
Afterlife with Archie is executive produced by Aguirre-Sacasa, Berlanti, Jimmy Gibbons, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, and Jon Goldwater. The series also marks Warner Bros. TV’s first series for Disney+.
