Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal Season 3 Episode 4, “Prey for the Wicked,” shifts its focus onto Fang and Mira and ends on a massive cliffhanger.

After three episodes of witnessing zombie Spear’s trek through a confusing world, “Prey for the Wicked” instead opts to take us back to see what became of Mira and Fang.

Judging by how heavily pregnant Mira is, the episode appears to take place several months after Spear’s death. Both she and Fang are still heavily feeling the grief of his loss, but even so, it’s sweet to see them find a little bit of comfort in each other.

That comfort is short-lived, however. Ravenous pig-like creatures attack the village and kidnap people to feed to their mother. Mira, Fang, Fang’s children, and several other tribe members go track them down.

This episode contains some major reveals. One of the most surprising of those is Mira discovering the shaman’s dead body for the revived Spear.

Not only does this reveal that Spear is not very far, but it also establishes that Mira and Fang don’t know that the village is under attack.

Fang is a bit of a protective mother, which makes sense given the fate of her other children. In a nightmare, we see Mira parallel those fears. The Viking chieftain kidnaps her newborn while Mira herself is speared by Ima.

While Mira is incredibly strong, it’s clear she feels unsafe without Spear.

Mira’s fears are confirmed in an action sequence that brings the brutality Primal excels at. The pig creatures they’re put up against are horrifying, and the sheer number of them is overwhelming.

One thing this show always does well is depict the visceral need to survive. There’s a constant sense of desperation, but never helplessness.

That need to survive contrasts well with Spear, who has no sense of self preservation at the moment.

Spear is already dead and has nothing to lose. But Mira is pregnant, and Fang has her children and therefore cannot afford to die.

The episode ends on a shocking cliffhanger. After fighting off the pigs, zombie Spear comes shambling out of the bushes, leaving Mira and the audience in shock.

The reunion came surprisingly soon, all things considered. It isn’t clear whether or not Fang and Mira were even alive, but with the discovery of the shaman’s body and this cliffhanger, it’s safe to say he really did find them.

It’s hard to say how they feel about this. Fang doesn’t even seem to recognize him just yet.

Hopefully, the next episode doesn’t leave us wondering for too long.
